I voted for VLC. I think its a great freeware program, it plays everything I send its way including DVD's.
To me VLC has to be my number 1 choice. It plays almost everything I throw at it and if the rip is bad I can always fix the sync within VLC itself, which is quite a handy feature.
I remember back in the old days of having to collect megapacks of codecs and were so frustrated whenever I had downloaded a movie and were unable to play it due to codec problems and figuring out what codec to use in order to play it (back when bandwidth was expensive). ;) I'm glad there's a program that plays whatever you wish and has nice features to help you with bad rips as well.
I voted for VLC. It is very practically.
Media player classic my choose
One remark: I use Media Player Classic Home Cinema and for some videos my choice is VLC (for TS streams usually and for proper deinterlace)... with k-lite mega + qt lite + coreAVC :p

I use MPC-HC. Never needed to install any external codecs with it - it has everything built in. It also has DXVA support - I watch movies mostly as HD/BD rips and never had any performance issues.
MPC HC is the simplest and best player for HD movies, there is a delay on hd movies with vlc..
