Wow, thanks for sharing the great guide. I've always had faith in 4chan's recommendations. Unfortunately my school computer classifies as "destitute" by these standards. I'll probably work on building my own rig once I have some money (read: am out of college). My friend actually built her own computer through parts purchased on Newegg, so she's got an amazing rig and put it together herself for cheap.
Edit: Actually, not EVEN destitute. 150GB HDD, 1GB ram... :(

My comp is under the exceptional :) i7 930 and 295GTX :)
This is great! Thank you for the post.
You can usually shave about $30 ~ $50 in any of these builds by buying them as combos. Newegg always has great combos where you can buy the CPU with motherboard, GPU, or Powersupply and save few bucks.
Also the build prices do not include Media drives (DVD, Blue Ray) and OS.
That would be extra $30 for DVD writer and $150 for Windows 7, unless there was some way to get the software without paying for it.......oh, right......
My pic for processor currently is Phenom II x2 555 Black Edition. This is actually a 4 core cpu with 2 cores disabled. With the right motherboard, you can unlock the 2 and get 4 cores for the price of 2. Also it overclocks very well. My recently built mobo only could unlock 1 of 2 so it is only 3 core, but with the overclock, I am getting a 3 core system running close to 4Ghz and the motherboard and CPU together was around $150. Can't beat that!
fantastic guide very detailed, perfect timing too. Getting ready to build a computer since mine is on its last legs! ty
