Thread: DDL/Usenet vs. Torrents ?

I never got any messages or emails for downloading stuff from trackers.I think it's because I also use an ipfilter for that.Anyway, I like torrents because you share with people and it's free.

I think we need to distinguish what warez site means here. As far as I can read.... I see that warez means 2 things here.
1. File sharing (megaupload, hotfile, rapidshare, etc.)
2. Usenet
Vs. the torrent. Each has it's plus and minuses.

Here we go.....
1. File Sharing
Pro: Retention is high. (as long as the host keeps the file)
Con: Have to find the right link
Con: Wait time + slow.
2. Usenet (Lifehacker Article)
Pro: Fast! I use Astraweb and I can get a 1.5gig movie in under 1 minute.
Pro: Retention - All files are available for 700 days. No seeders needed.
Con: Not free - Astraweb is $25 for 180gig.
Con: Need to look for bin. in usenet. (or use site like NZBmatrix)
3. Torrent
Pro: Good content
Pro: Fast? (only if enough seeders and high speed seeders are on)
Con: Some low seeded files take forever!
Con: old files lose seeders

I am sure I am missing a lot but I use both Torrent and Usenet.
Usenet allows me to get stuff right away without having to wait long.
Torrent on the other hand has more contents and collections that are not found on Usenet.

PS ( I downloaded 2 movies from usenet totaling 4.2 gig while typing this.)

I prefer torrents and ddl forums, because usenet access mostly is hard to get.

I'm sticking with torrents 'cuz I always know what I'm downloading.

Currently have an Astraweb subscription and a seedbox for private trackers. The only gripe I have so far is that my seedbox can't sustain a 800kb/s download through FTP/SFTP, where as Astraweb gives me 800kb/s+ consistently, every time. That being said, I've got my share of fake/passworded/virus'd files from Usenet aswell.

Now if I could just get my seedbox to upload full speed, I could get rid of my damn usenet account.

I also have Astraweb.. always matches my line speed with it also. sure it costs money, and theres a lot of viruses, and fake stuff but a hell of a lot of it is real and stuff that I couldn't find anywhere else for me. Thing is you don't have to upload with Usenet.. or maintain a ratio so if you are like me and have a small data limit then maybe it's good for you.. but any way I also like torrents and run a seedbox, to keep a decent ratio.. though I can't max my connection via FTP for some reason.

I will go for torrents as you don't have to pay for using torrents, and that is good for the students like me..
