    Default Server Advice Needed

    Hey everyone =)

I need some advice. I was thinking of buying a dual core CPU for my PC. But whilst browsing the net, I came across this -

    HP ProLiant ML115 Server AMD Opteron Dual Core 1214 2.2GHz 512MB RAM 160GB SATA DVDR/RW 4U micro ATX tower (3 year next business day warranty) - 470064-786 - www.microdirect.co.uk

It's a server that has a dual core CPU. It's only £129 & it got some decent specs. I have helped people out with their servers over remote desktop, but I have never owned a server myself & I have never installed a OS onto one.

I am also interested in using VMware ESXi Hypervisor which is only availible on Servers not on deskotps. Will it work on this server? I have used ESXi on my desktop using server emulators, but it didn't work to well.

I know that many home OSs like XP Home probably won't work & I also know that a lot of SW won't work on a server. I want to know the following -

    1) Can I dual boot 2 server OSs on it? I was thinking of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise 64bit & Red Hat Server 5.1 64bit.

    2) Can I use desktop HW in it? It says it has a 16x PCI Express, a SATA & a DDR2 RAM socket. Can I transfer my desktop HW which uses these sockets over to my server & expect it to work?

    3) Will this use standard PC cables like the 3 pin power?

    4) Is that server a good buy?

    5) The description doesn't specify a CPU type. What CPU socket do most AMD servers use? AM2?

    Thanks in advance.... =)

    1. yes
    2. probably.
    3. yes, better connect it to a PDU if you have one.
    4. no.
    5. see answer #4.

:) take it into consideration that servers need to be cooled WAY more than regular PCs and they make WAY more noise.
You better buy a server and host it somewhere else, other than your house. Better conditions and bandwidth.

Thanks for the response, it was really helpful. I more wanted it just to mess around on & not to do anything serious. Also, I wanted a dual core PC, but this dual core server seems to be cheaper than most dual core desktops. What is a PDU?

I know it's a REALLY cheap server, but as it is only for messing around on & nothing serious, I think that one might be OK. It only has 8MB graphics & 512MB RAM, but as my desktop uses the same sockets, I could just transfer all my nice HW over to the server.

When you say that they need to be cooled more than normal, how much do you mean? It's in a big case & it isn't rackmounted, so surely the heat would be fine? I'll buy additional case fans if I need to.

I'm not trying to host anything on it, I just want it as a thing to mess around with. I really want to see VMware ESXi working on it's native platform you see.

I know it's a crap server, but considering it's £129 new & I won't be using it for anything serious, is it a good buy?

    Thanks =)

I believe it's cheaper than a PC due to the fact that it is not top-of-the-line and it's a tower.
When people buy servers they buy racks, people do not buy tower servers to act as desktops. That baby weighs almost 12Kg while my desktop weighs nothing..

As you said, it's graphics and ram are also a downside, also it has only 1 power supply (although you said it's nothing serious).

I think you should add a bit more money and get yourself a descent desktop.
It doesn't say "Recommended Use Small business, corporate business" and it's not 12Kg for nothing.

think about it a while, you know ? on the other hand, if you do not care about the 11 extra kilos and you really want to test a "server" env' - go for it. it wont make you bankrupt you.

I really wouldn't go with that, while it may be cheap, the specs are a bit of a downer and it would be better just to save a little more and buy a good desktop in the long run.
