Default Quad Core mac Vs Quad Core pc

Anyone got any thoughts on which computer would be better for streaming HD content to a ps3 i've got a core 2 duo macbook pro but it stutters when trying to stream hd movies using ps3 media server. Would prefer to get a mac but they bit expensive compared to a quad core pc.

Apple about some time now are using intel aka pc technology for their hardware.

So i will never buy apple machine for the apple sticker only, and if you want to have mac os try hackintosh on your machine.

I agree with dusanR, the underlying hardware in Apple macs is now very similar to that of an equivalent PC, if you're just looking for a machine that will match your hardware requirements and the software will run on both platforms then a PC will be the cheaper option.

The difference in performance between a PC and a Mac containing the same CPU and RAM will be fairly minimal, it can be harder to keep that level of performance on a PC as software programmers seem to be arrogant enough to think that you want their software to run every time you boot your PC but as long as you manage your windows services and startup items you can keep a PC performing pretty well over time.

Shouldn't your macbook be able to handle streaming HD video?

straightline: are u streaming via wireless or cable ? Are u streaming .MKV's ?
I had a core 2 duo laptop and it streamed 720p just fine to my ps3 using the ps3 media server, but 1080p wouldn't tho, lots of spikes and slowdowns... i'm guessing its 2 heavy on a core 2 duo cpu...

Anyways i found this link ( PS3 Media Server • View topic - mkv 1080p streaming - CPU 100% ) hope it helps you solve the problem. Be sure to check the rest of the forum and perhaps ask some questions there.. they seem to be nice folk :)

I do know the problem has something to do with remuxing and transcoding, but bcause thats not my area of expertise i can't really help you out :\ Try and figure out what those names mean and be sure to check their forums for extra information i'm sure u'll get to the problem quickly =)

I'm using a ethernet cable through a gigabit box. I converted all the mkv to avchd m2ts and they stream alot better and quicker than mkv

Thats odd. I've got a C2D 2.4 with 4GB RAM and streaming 1080p over gigabit ethernet is not a problem.

Either way - I'd get a PC if you want to use it for sole purpose of real time encoding of movies - you could build a cheap i7 box too.
