Meh... I did away with optical years ago now...
Can you imagine losing/scratching a disc with 500gb of data.. or worse getting disc rot CRC nightmare imo + they are more expensive than a hdd anyways.

as the article stated it will eventually become less costly, so it'd be nice for porting media, like movies, softwares etc

Okay but what happens to you porting of media, movies and software alike when you scratch the disk? That one hell of an expensive scratch if you ask me.

I'll stick with my external hard drives for such as task personally. Seeing as how I can get a 1TB drive for $100-$130 USD and have a warranty plus better luck in not damaging them. Although we all know things can happen.

The way the pricing for hard drives are coming down these days, there will be no need for optical media. You will be downloading games directly to consoles or computers, movies will be streamed (Netflix) or downloaded (iTunes).

The only optical media I still use are blu-rays. I purchased a WD TV Live and attached two external 1.5tb to it and the whole setup cost $300. By the time the price of the new media comes down, 5tb hdd will be available for like $100!

The first thing I do when I buy a laptop, is take out the optical drive because there is no need for it.

greatham - I love my WD Live TV also. All my TV has to be downloaded. I recommend one for anyone wanting to download blue-ray MKV files and play back in HD on their TV.

I own a WDTV myself. However I still see a need for optical drives, although that need is slowly dwindling. Although it's not the WDTV Live I still enjoy it. I use it for all of my HD animes.

Any more I just use dvd-r to back up important stuff (torrents) and keep them away from my kids so in case a HHD failure were to happen I can get my media back.

The only time I ever use CD's/DVD's/etc is when something requires me to boot from it i.e. installing an OS.
