    User comments? Are you joking?

User comments mean nothing. Test scores mean everything.

Trend Micro is horrible, and has been for years.

This is AV Comparitives, one of the primary 3rd party sources for test scores that IT guys use.

Just a year or so ago, Trend Micro was so crappy that it wasn't even considered for the main tests. A couple years ago, it scored in the 70 percent detection rate for on demand. A 90 percent is like an F-.

Also, even the best anti-virus will not protect you against many of the most common, and problematic infections. Any infection that spawns new variations frequently, has a slightly varying payload, or is polymorphic in nature, will be very hard/impossible for a conventional anti-virus... or any general purpose automated tool to detect via signatures, which are AVs main weapon. Heuristics are good, but are only supplementary.

They also wont be any good against anything utilizing rootkit technology, which is pretty much any good payload that has a keylogger/backdoor.

If you have windows XP, a real time registry monitor is a must. Spybot s&d Tea Timer is free, and good.

If you access sensisitve information, i.e. online banking from your computer, a software firewall is very smart. Windows firewall sucks, as its registry based, and quite easily disabled by malware.

Good free software firewalls are comodo, or keiro (now sunbelt)

INVISUS is the best anti-virus program, bar none. This is the same antivirus protector software that the government uses.

i re-installed windows 7 yesterday and after that i installed bitdefender 2009 free edition, thats also pretty awesome, btw i checked out the website http://www.av-comparatives.org and their test seems pretty useful in evaluation and avira's in top 3 in almost all of the tests, and guess what they are offering avira premium security suite for free for 3 months :)
