Can somebody clarify whether 8gb DDR3 is redundant?
By that I mean shouldn't triple configurations be 3 X 1GB (3), 3 X2GB (6), 3X4GB (12) to provide optimum performance?

8GB would not be "redundant" if your system is lets say based on the LGA 1156 socket.
As that socket which is used for some Core i7 CPU along with Core i5 and Core i3 can only run DDR3 in Dual Channel. However if you have a LGA1366 socket then yes you would want 3 x 1GB, 3 x2GB, and or 3 x4GB to be able to run in triple channel.
