Default Sony taken to court over PS3 'Other OS' removal

If you own a PS3 or are even interested in the PS3 you may want to check this article out. There has been quite an uproar since sony released a new firmware update quite some time ago regarding the removal of the 'Other OS' function. Owners of the PS3 have gone as far as to take legal action upon the company. What this could mean for Sony in 2010...who knows.

I would be shocked if this affected Sony at all. The lawsuit will get settled, the lawyers will collect their fees and consumers will probably get a coupon for a nominal amount of credit to purchase Sony products. Plus, what percentage of PS3 owners care or even know about the "Other OS" functionality? I suspect an infinitesimal number, although disproportionately the type to take to the internet in protest.

    I totally agree with Rellik,

It wont even affect Sont and even if it does its only 0.01 - 0.1% at the most. Most people dont use linux and even if they do they dont have sources to take Sony to court. Plus Sony can buy the best lawers and easily win the case. Even if they dont then, even then they might find a way through and agree only partly to the users. These guys are smart and usually get what they want :P

"wait for Geohot to make it all better." ^^

I haven't upgraded yet but if a game comes along that I wanna play that requires a newer FW I'm not gonna wait for geohot to crack the ps3.

I'm not using the other-OS function, but I find it pretty cheeky that Sony can just delete a feature that I've paid for and that was advertised to me when I purchased the product...

they are deleting the otheros function in lieu of the ps3 almost being hacked. not to mention otheros doesn't... didn't work on the ps3 slim.

I am not a user of the other os either, but atleast let me keep what I paid for incase I ever intend to use it...I was reading more about this and they say that this law has been untested. so who knows where this will go now.

I have been waiting around for geohot myself. everyone claimed that he was working on the Ipad and a new firmware for the iphone that is why all of the spotlight was taken away from the ps3. But its been 3 weeks since any updates have been posted to his blog. I'd say don't hold you breathe if I were you.

The biggest users of the OtherOS function are universities, and government groups. They purchase 1000s and also document all the advance programing they come up with for the cell, but now they've been sort of burnt by Sony.
