You can say what you will but you'll always come back to books. The best way to learn html is to get one of these books and follow every example on the side on your computer. The problem with learning online is you'll get into the habit early of copy/pasting code, which later on won't be bad, but initially you're going to want to program the language in your brain just like you would on a study abroad for a foreign language. Here is a small list of the books i've found to be the most useful:
- Most of the SitePoint : New Articles, Fresh Thinking for Web Developers and Designers books, all done by people who make websites and don't just write books, they also have a great book on HTML emails which is a good place to start since its the most basic html.
- Five Simple Steps - Designing for the web (not an html book but you'll want to start by getting a background before jumping in)
Don't forget to be patient, some people write websites for a living and still don't know how it all works.
