    Default 8gb vs 12gb ram

    I am thinking about upgrading from 8 to 12GB (DDR2 1066 on Win7 64)
I've read certain articles that say that there is no noticeable difference in performance between 8GB and 12GB.
However, I would like input from people that are actually using 12GB.
    TY

    What specs are your computer,
Do you have tripple channel or duel channel(socket 1366, or socket 1156)?
    what CPU?

well you will have to upgrade to 8GB
because you run duel channel ram
the max you can upgrade to is 8Gb due to the use of DDR2

How many and which programms are you running to have a need of the extra 4 GB?
If you are nit doing graphic editing or video editing, there is no real use of so much ram.

8gb is already overkill imo, spend the money on some other upgrade. I have 4gbs and I barely even use 3gbs even while playing hardware expensive games :D

I depends on what they are doing.
I have 6GB and I use around 4-5GB, If I run Ps I end up needing to page file, but no big deal on a SSD. I am waiting for 4GB chips to get cheaper then will buy 3 of them, for 12 GB of sexy rams :P

Wow, dude, when I initially read this topic I was going to post and ask why the hell you would need 12 gigs of ram, then I got down and saw this part. Just what are you running lol.. Cause I only got 4 gigs, and I can like run win7, firefox, a video encode, and be playing a game and not use it all.

And to answer the question of the topic, if you are just looking to increases the performance of your computer, and you aren't using up all your ram, basically the only thing that would matter is the speed of the ram. And to make an upgrade there you would need a whole new motherboard and CPU that would support newer, higher frequency ram.

8 gigs of RAM is plenty for almost anything. Before you even think about upgrading your ram... what video card are you using? This will usually give you a much better performance increase. Especially in Windows 7 (awesome!) or Vista (crap!).

With that being said, the only reason for 12 gigs of ram would be video editing or possibly editing extremely large images in Photoshop at 300 dpi.

In those situations you could notice a difference. With normal use however - you won't notice a difference between 8 and 12 gigs of ram. You will however notice a difference if you change from a bad video card to a good one.

    Also, here's a tip:

If you're using Windows 7 (I'm not sure if this exists in Vista) then click the start button and search for "windows experience" then select the "Check the Windows Experience Index" option. This is a nice, easy way to find out what the limiting factor on your computer is. (Although your personal limiting factor usually depends on what applications you frequently use.)

Here's a screenshot of my windows experience index for reference. My disc drive is what's slowing me down. Probably because I'm using an IDE drive as my primary drive. The whole thing still runs great though so I've got no complaints.
