    We’ve written about this CPU on plenty of occasions, but our colleagues from TechReport have come across an EU listing of Intel’s new addition to its i7 series – the Core i7 980 Extreme Edition.

    We’ll recap real quick – this is the first six core CPU for desktops and are based on 32nm Westmere architecture. It comes with HyperThreading, 12MB of L3 cache and supports turbo boost up to 3.6GHz. It features DDR3 support up to 1066MHz and its TDP will be at 130W.

    The listing puts the CPU’s price at € 1.099,-, which is pretty good as the same retailer sells i7-975 Extreme Edition at only a tad lower price. The e-tailer lists availability date as March 14th.

    The E5000 series xeon processors overclocks a lot better and costs less though.

    It also breaks the bank

    Although it would be awesome to own a six core from intel seeing as how AMD six core offering is rather revolting.

    It's priced at $1,049.99 same as previous extreme chips. I only see two good things out of this 1.) If you got the cash for an extreme chip it's good seeing as this is now a viable contender. 2.) Now that they have released the pricey six-core it is only a matter of time before they introduce mid to low level offerings of six-core CPU.

    Especially (even though they are not great) since AMD has released two nicely priced six-core CPU.

    You should know that the architecture of a 980 is the exact same as a 920. By overclocking a 920, you have, almost molecule for molecule, the same thing as a more expensive i7 series.

    Also, it's false that the Xeons will give you a better performance for your dollar. They Their design is not suited for most people. To get a quick general sense:

    And as for some idea as to how your i7 920 will overclock:

    The only difference between the extreme version is that the multiplier is unlocked.

    Given that the architecture of the 920 is the same as the extreme version, you are not going to get much performance advantage by ramping your extreme up even further.

    The main market is for

    a.) People who dont know any better and think they are getting way, way more performance by spending 500% more.

    b.) People who simply love to overclock.

    c.) People who find it worthwhile to spend a couple grand to get 5% more performance.

    I'm not a fan in such of things like OC etc. When the games or OS start to lag on my computer then I look back on hardware changes but buying for more 3DMarks or more Ghz it's not for me :}
