Hey guys,

I have done some research on the difference between these two but I have no real experience with it.

I have 5 2TB hard drives I want to RAID together in RAID 5. I’m trying to decide whether to use a hardware RAID solution or a software RAID solution. One problem is that you can only configure RAID 5 with Windows Disk Management for Windows Server and not Windows 7, Vista, or XP. The option is grayed out for these. I am currently running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

One of the reasons I am interested in the software solution is because I heard it is safe. If my hardware RAID controller dies there is a very little chance I can replace it with the same controller and maintain all my data. However with software RAID, from what I read, when you reinstall the software it is able to reconfigure the drives and read all the data.

Is there any good RAID software available that you would recommend or should I set it up using the RAID controller?

Price is not an issue because I already have the hardware RAID capability.

I appreciate the input guys :001_smile:
