KEYSTONE KOPS SOFTWARE OUTFIT Microsoft has shot itself in the foot with its Windows 7 stability updates that we reported on here.

One of the stability updates, KB977074, has been found to be responsible for compromising the stability of the operating system. Oh, the irony.

The update was one of many issued by Microsoft for Windows 7 just two weeks ago and the stability concerns have been highlighted by some annoyed forum members in a thread on the Vole's Technet.

Problems posted by thread denizens include crashed PCs and system hangs forcing reboots but there are also issues reported with Microsoft's media centre and recording programs.

Given that these aren't minor issues, the Vole replied to the thread with solution suggestions. Microsoft moderator Arthur Li recommended that anyone with the hang problem should disable antivirus programs, update drivers and restart their PC with a clean boot, then reapply the update.

More perturbing is the fact that Li suggests a BIOS update as well. BIOS updates are much simpler now with some PCs having auto-upgrade options available, but how many average Windows 7 users will be happy doing it?

So far no one has responded to say this has worked and Li even suggested that users having ongoing problems trying to apply the patch should "wait for the next stability and reliability update."

Not much help there, then. µ
