    Default i7,5,3

Does anyone here use any of these new processors (well, somewhat new)? Which one do you use and how does it perform with what you do? I've been looking into the quad i5. Let me know.

    Well, it depends what you need your processor for;
Keep in mind that there is i7 Lynnfield for LGA1156 (core i7 800 series) and LGA1366 (core i7 900 series).
LGA1366 has triple channel and LGA1156 has dual channel, honestly there is no big difference between them, plus LGA1366 has too expensive motherboards and bigger power consumption (130W TDP), and processor heating issues.
Lynnfield is better in my opinion, cooler, lower pow. consumption, and the memory controller is better than bloomfield one (1366).
Only difference between core i5 and core i7 is Hyper Threading, if you have no need for that, go for i5 processor.
I own one (i5) and I'm extremly satisfied, overclocks excellent, and it's very cool.

In addition to your question, i5 does all the work just fine and even more.

Never quite understood hyperthreading, but do many applications, specifiically games use it? Cause I'm thinking i5, just need to make sure I'm not going to hate myself the day I realize I want hyperthreading for something...

My old pentium 4 had hyperthreading... It gives ~ 1.2x - 1.5x increase in performance... Definitely a plus!

Think of a processor like a road linking 2 far apart cities...
Having more cores is like having more lanes
and the GHz frequency is the max speed limit of the road

so obviously the more lanes there are with higher speed limits will mean more cars get to where they need to go quicker.... ie faster pc

now hyperthreading is basically in certain cirmcumstances, the road may be slightly wider than usual, but not wide enough for 2 lanes of cars, but 2 motorcycles may be able to travel next to each other, thus increasing the rate of movement of traffic... hyperthreading is the same, in certain circumstances it will speed up ur pc ;) they're sort of like having extra virtual cores

i7 stuff are stupidly fast btw
benchmarks show top quad core i7 is about 2x faster than intels original quad core q6600 isn't it?
I5 is a brilliant choice tho

    Great explanation there Xalos!

Well, to make things clear since we could debate about i5 and i7 forever.

DantheMan, what are you going to use your computer for?

For now, and in close future (1-2 years) there really won't be any need for hyperthreading in games and standard desktop applications.
At least not in proffesional ones.
Hence, I doubt you could feel the difference between q6600 and i7 920, I'm talking from my own experience since I worked on almost all sorts of platforms.
Everything you might be doing that needs much power can be handled via Nvidia CUDA or Ati's ATI STREAM.
By now it became a standard .
Now, someone will probably try to proove diferent, and maybe he/she will be right about some aspects, but trust me, you won't notice the difference between i5 and i7 , let alone Q6600.
And I'm not mentioning overclocking capabillities in my post since than this would be completly different thread and my opinions would be greatly changed :)

DantheMan, when buying i5 be carefull what MBO are you getting with it.
It's rather important due to overclocking capabillities, since you'll be gaming a lot eventually you'll wanna your performances to boost thus giving you better graphics in case CPU bottlenecks your GPU .
