    Default Cisco vs Other Vendors

I currently only have experience with Cisco routers and switches, and I am trying to decide if we should switch to a different vendor. Cisco tends to have lower specs in their equipment for a higher price than their competitors, but they also seem to have many benefits in their IOS that other vendors do not have. Just a couple of the many examples include EIGRP (entire protocol is Cisco proprietary) and the weight metric for BGP.

Is the extra cost for the cisco routers and switches really helping us, or could a corporate network perform just as well on the cheaper HP/Juniper routers? I have not looked into HP or Juniper routers beyond the hardware specs yet, so I do not know the quality of their products and their router operating systems.

For an idea of our network, we currently have 6 routers and 12 switches. The routers use EIGRP to maintain their IGP information, but they also run BGP to help redirect users to their nearest server. BGP is also used for WAN connectivity between the servers in different countries.

Also, if you had a choice between the three vendors in the poll above, what vendor would you choose?

I would say it depends on circumstance a few circumstances... Is your current network infrastructure not adequate and you need to get new network equipment or have a major expansion coming up? If not I see no reason to make the switch, "If it ain't broke don't fix it!"

If your IT depart its on a tight budget and you need to add routers for cheap that is the only reason I see HP or Juniper being viable. Cisco is the gold standard and by the leader when it comes to networking devices and technologies. Yes they are more expensive but better supported, have better technologies and it is easier to find people that are familiar or have experience with Cisco equipment than any other brand.
