    Hi guys,

I've been using the ps3 now for over a year as a media player and I must say I am quite happy with my current setup. Got a pioner kuro 50 inch and a pioneer HD av receiver.

I used to have a NAS thecus 3200PRO hoked up via gb wired to the PS3. But found that it had issues with mkv/HP formats. Quite happy with the NAS although it is getting quite slow after 1year+, I might need to rebuild my raid or something

After trawling the web for some time and installing various apps I have now settled for this config:
PS3 media server(free ware java based, nuts&bolts approach) on the pc, connected to my nas storage. PMS also offers the ability to just browse folders. I was so happy that I did no longer needed to rely on a internally managed mediaplaylist to browse my content. I have quite alot of media so imagine, just finished the 1080p version of <insert great kids moviename>. You tell your 3 year old daughter to sit down so you can watch it with her. Switch on tv, receiver, ps3. start browsing the media library only to find it hasnt been updated. Frantic forced refreshes of said media library, reboot ps3, take NAS off line, disable streamer soft, re-enable it etc etc etc :D
with PSM you just select a directory and it will just do that. On the PS3 you will see the dir, and all the playable files in it. No need to refresh the catalogue, it just shows the current files in there.
I can now stream 1080p flawlessly and include subs if I want to

What are your preferred config to play HD content on your tv ?

Currently I am using TVersity but it has the updating thing you are talking about. I do have PS3 Media Server, are you saying this one automatically updates because if that was the case, I would be using it already lol. And I was also wondering about mkv format. I saw you had mentioned it. Have you found any way around converting out of mkv format with the PS3? I know the machine isn't meant to play it, but I have also heard something about PS3 Media Server converting on the fly for you.

Anyway, thank you for sharing yoursetup, and I will check back here and see what anyone else has going on as well.

    Hi there,

the PS3 media server is a separate freeware tool you install on your pc, it reencodes mkv's on the fly and streams it to the media player on the PS3.

So I torrent a file to my NAS box (network share device), my pc maps a drive to one of the network drives on the NAS. the freeware tool then reads the original mkvs and streams them to the normal ps3 media player on the ps3 - does that make sense ?

I have already made a thread about this so closed (next time do a search before you make a thread). The ps3 media server does not convert it on the fly, it has MEncoder and just streams the full video to your T.V without any conversion (on the fly or not) needed whatsoever.
