Default Small lag spikes from hell.

I just got a new computer and although i've been writing to the hard drive non stop and loading all of my fav apps at once, I thought a 1TB WD hard drive, a quad core processor, 8gb of ram, and BitDefender could handle it. I started getting small lag spikes about 2 days ago and now they are a tiny bit bigger and more noticable. I am so frustrated that I could kill a dead baby panda and I really really need to find some kind of solution or I will wind up date raping my imaginary friend Matilda. What would you recommend doing?

if it's just lag spikes, it seems to me that it's probably a seeking problem with your hard drive. an error in your cpu or ram would cause data loss and program errors, most likely. I'd start by downloading from their site the HDD error checking software. being model specific, it's much more suited to what you have than say, checkdisk. WD Support > Downloads > Select Product

not to mention WD (I believe it was WD anyway) had a problem a few years ago with the glue that held the disk platters in place melting because of the high RPM the drives were running at. so even large companies make mistakes like this that eventually get fixed. but until they do, people are left scratching their heads wondering what the hell is going on. the fact that it's getting worse and still not causing errors is pointing me toward the hard drive. I hope it works out!

I just bought a new computer myself, very similar to yours where my power supply popped like a firecracker and a huge flash of light came out the back. it was a 1000 watt corsair. who would have thought! until I got my new one, I was shitting a brick hoping to god everything else was fine. got my new one and everything's working like a charm now.

I think the flasher is right it sounds like a seeking problem. the first thing I would do is a chkdsk though.

so anyway here is an off topic horror story since you told yours. It was when It was one of the first custom builds I did myself, I set everything up, double checked it, everything looked perfect and good. Fired it up for the first time it posted and then i started hearing a sizzling sound. Immediately ripped my power chord out, and opened up the case and my hard drive had literally melted, all over my GPU and just ended up wrecking my entire build. I don't think I will ever forget that sizzling sound. The sound can only be described as if you put olive oil on a pan and then put onions on the pan. It was pretty mortifying.

@Flasher I tried it but the damn thing said everything was fine. Do you have any other suggestions if the HD isn't the problem? I am really sick of this!

@Ethicks That sucks but it was funny to read.

ethics: LOL I don't mean to laugh, but I would have LOVED to see a picture of that!

john: ridiculous question, but I don't suppose you'd have another hard drive you could try just to rule that out? I'm still leaning towards the hard drive... the only other thing I could picture doing that without errors is some kind of virus or other malware. before you swap out the hard drive, download and update spybot S&D and give that a run. if nothing comes up, I'd try a different hard drive just to exclude that 100%

edit: because now that I think about it, I'm not really sure the hard disk scanning program would pick up a seeking problem... it may just have taken a little longer for the scan to complete. I don't have a whole lot of experience with seeking problems. most of the hard drives I've had die was the motor, and there ain't much saving that.
