Default Which Remote desktop software and why?

    Hi T-I members!
    M assembling an Atom-based rig

    Motherboard--Intel D945GCLF
    RAM--Corsair VS1GB667D2 1GB
    HDD--Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 @ 250GB SATA
    Cabinet--Iball Nettop 009

Now the problem is , i want to connect it remotely. Don't want to waste my money on another monitor. If any of you have used any remote desktop software, could you please give me a guide.
I tried the TEAM VIEWER but couldn't make most out of it.

I'm not sure if it's just me or what but I've never felt the need to download a third party software to remote desktop since using Window's Remote Desktop Connection does everything I need. I currently have my local network branched to a home server PC that is in the basement. All four PCs around the house, a few netbooks, a few laptops, a few XBox360s, a PS3, and a WD HDTV media player all streams its files from there. I don't have a monitor connected to the server either and remotely connecting to that rig using Window's software does everything I need it to do. I suppose what I'm getting here is what exactly do you need it to do? If it's simply relocating files and downloading files, I'd stick to the basic Window's software.

Oh no worries. If you need a tutorial to set that up, I suggest you search google as there are plenty, but if you're having any issues after doing so just post here again and I'll gladly assist.

I would use Windows Remote Desktop Client if you're system is going to be a windows based server, if it is going to be Linux and you're going to have a GUI then TightVNS or UltraVNC would be better.

Windows RDP is pretty straight forward, if your client machine is a windows based system then goto Start > Run > type MSTSC when the windows remote desktop box comes up input your server's IP address and wait for the login screen to come up.

You will need to have your Remote Desktop enabled, you can do this by going to the Control Panel > System > Remote Tab > and clicking the second check box to enable remote desktop. If you're running the windows firewall you will need to add this as an exception to allow remote desktop to work.

If you have any questions, just shoot me a pm :)

I second that, there is *almost* no need for 3rd party software, as Windows RDP is excellent. I've been using it for years. I just recently had to switch to a 3rd party software solution (LogMeIn Free), as I'm forced to use a corporate Web proxy at work, so ONLY web connections are allowed, and Windows RDP will not work at all. LogMeIn silently sets up a tunnel through their servers, consisting only in HTTP traffic, so it goes through any corporate proxy.

So, no need for any money. Just use Windows RDP if you aren't forced to go through a web proxy. If you are, use LogMeIn Free!

    Default Remote

Interesting enough, I had a similar question once in the past. I managed to find this on my quest searching for the best software to do remote connectivity

Comparison of remote desktop software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    What do I use?

    - Windows Remote Desktop for Internal (Through the network) and External use (By Basic Port Forwarding)

Reasons To: Internet not requiered - Easy to use - has audio support - windows mobile phones can even use the same over 3G.

Reasons Against: When its hard to port forward or when I've got a windows xp home or vista premium which doesnt have the feature. (You can still get that running, but you'll have to search the web for patches and stuff)

    - I also use Logmein

Reasons To: Sometimes in some places you get limited by the firewall! The logmein software works as long as you have http access.

Reasons Against: When internet is not available + it sometimes tends to be slow.

    - & Teamviewer

Reasons To: Simillar to logmein but even Simpler - no need to install (just run option), no need to port forward. I mainly use this to sort out my friends problems :)

Reasons Against: Although this one works with IP's if internet wasn't available but can be slow and limited in features.

    Blur,

Do they sniff the traffic for HTTP, or are they only allowing connections on port 80? You can actually modify RDP to listen on port 80 instead of 3389, I had to do this for a friend at another place of business, she could not use IM and was not really allowed to surf the internet, so she remote desktopped into a PC I had at my place of work and the only way for her to get out of their network was either via the public email port or port 80 so I setup RDP to listen on 80 and it worked great!

    Just a suggestion, thanks :)

It looks like Windows 7 is the same as Vista. The client is in all versions. The server functionality is only available in Professional (and Enterprise/Ultimate).
