Default Monitor display cuts out intermittently (advice appreciated)

I have a 2.5 - 3 year old Dell flatscreen LCD monitor that just started malfunctioning the other day. It displays fine for about 10 seconds and then it just cuts off. The power light on the monitor stays green but there's no picture. If I turn the power off and then back on it will show up again for another 10 seconds or so before cutting off again. I had just hooked my 360 up to it and was cycling through the different resolution settings right before it happened, so maybe I accidentaly selected an unsupported resolution and fried something? I'm hoping it's just a power supply problem that I can have repaired, but I have basically no experience when it comes to monitors. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problems?

Are you using the same PC now with a different monitor? If not, have you tried using a different monitor? Have you tried connecting the Dell LCD to a different tower? Any case, try booting into safe mode and see if you're able to load windows in VGA mode under lowest resolution. You can then readjust the resolution to what it was before. Or you can simply do a system restore to just before this happened. If this doesn't work, then yes, your monitor might be fried. It could be a number of things. One, the backlight blew, the transformer is defective, or a power supply issue like you've mentioned, but you said the power light is active so that might not be the case. Anyways., hope you can get it going or perhaps you've already resolved the issue.

Thanks for the ideas el2em, I'll definitely give the safe mode idea a try. I already tried connecting to a different tower so I'm pretty sure that the monitor is causing the problem. I'm not at home right now but I'll try the safe mode and a system restore if I have to later today, and I'll let you know how that goes.

I tried safe mode with no luck so I ended up just taking it to the shop for repair. I'm pretty sure it's a bad capacitor.
