Hey guys, so as of late i have been finding it extremely hard to find a dvd encoder that keeps the file in its original quality (from both aspects of video/audio). I downloaded the starwars SAGA in 720P and want to burn them to DVD, keeping the same quality.

If i need to get bigger sized dvd's that fine, but ive got 4.7GB. The size of the .avi 720P movies are about 3GB each.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ripe :)

Never tried using it for DVD's but you might want to try Super (c) from eRightSoft. If you use the pre-config options for DVD it should have a higher res than the avi options.
This is one of the best userbars I have ever seen:

I'm not really sure what you're trying to do.

Are you trying to convert the movies to a DVD format?
IFO, VOB's etc. So you can play it on a standard DVD player (one that does not recognise avi's)

If so then as far as i am aware you can't and keep the 720p quality, the converter will downscale it to be either PAL or NTSC standard which have less vertical line (576 and 480 respectively) it will reduce the bitrate as well.

If you're just burning the file as you got it then you don't need to encode it, just burn it as data using NERO or ImgBurn etc but it's going to be one film per disc.

if you're trying to compress the data to fit them onto a single disc, then as soon as you compress it then you lose quality.

Well cheers for the help i sorta understand it a little more, but ill ask another question.

What is the best way to watch 720P .avi files on a 50" Plasma. And if if the only option is buying a dvd player that plays .avi files that is fine. Just need to know the best way as ive been trying to find this out for ages..

Also, if i burnt it onto a blu-ray disk with a blu ray burner would it be the sam quality as the .avi?

    cheers heaps man

do you have a ps3? if you do you could just stream it in 1080 p
without lag, converting, or any quality drop

if you do have a ps3 google ps3 media server.

if you don't.. consider buying a ps3 its only like 100
bucks more than a blue-ray player anyway.

U can use programs like nero or imgburn to burn the avi as a data disc, but then u need a dvd player capable of playing the files. I would suggest getting an hdmi-upconvert-divx compatable player for this. They are worth every penny.

Yes burning the avi to bluray disc will keep the original quality, but im not sure if bluray players handle this. Some probably do, but dont quote me on that.

Those are just some examples, but your best bet would be what ethicks said and get a ps3 for this. I believe xbox can also handle bluray, but only 2 channel audio though. This is something u need to do some research on and decide what route u wanna go.

Another option would be a WDTV. Plays back virtually everything you can throw at it with no conversion neccessary. Costs under $100.

Best little gadgest i ever bought.

If you want to play pretty much every video on your TV WDTV or Popcorn Hour are your friends. When you want to play Bluray's too think about a PS3, but you need a PC to stream the videos since the PS3 doesn't play everything. The PC should have some power since videos sometimes have to be transcoded in the background while streaming.

Well, all the feedback has been fantasitc :)

Buying a new DVD player isn't an option for me atm, BUT i am quite certain my sisters DVD player can upconvert. I know it says it plays DivX and it has HDMI cables in back. Not sure if that's what your talking about MikeD? Also if i made it into a datadisc, would that keep quality? And how do i tell if my DVD player can play these and upconverts?

whats WDTV? I live in Australia, and have never heard of it.

Could someone also explain what a datadisc is compared to burning my .avi to DVD or BluRay?

Cheers for allt he help guys

Yes thats exactly what im talking about. Your sisters dvd player is an hdmi-upconvert divx dvd player. If u have that, then thats all u need.

Burning as a data disc would keep the quality as long as u dont go over the required disc space. It will burn the movie as is straight to disc. U would be able to tell if your dvd player supports this by it saying DivX on it, which yours does. Also make sure to use hdmi cables, so it will upconvert it to 1080. If u dont, it wont upconvert. The hdmi cables are the key.

There is no difference. A data disc is the same thing as burning the avi to dvd. Your just burning the movie to dvd thats all. Dont think of it as a data disc, but a dvd movie. If u would convert the movie to dvd then that would be a whole different process, but then thats how u would lose the quality u want to keep. Burning it staright to dvd will keep the original quality of the movie. So say u have a 720p movie. If u would burn it straight to dvd, it wont lose quality, but if u convert it first, it would downscale the movie to the standard. Hope u understand.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that an avi is just a container that holds codecs like divx/xvid codec. Make sure your movie is a divx or xvid file so it will play on the player. U can always find out by a program called gspot. Also, i rarely seen 720 blu-ray movies encoded with the divx codec. They're usually done with h.264 and the containers are mp4 or mkv. If thats the case then this method wont work and your better going another route for those type of files.
