Best version would be XP SP2.It has better firewall than SP1.Sp3 just installs security updates.
basically anything version v2002 or better.. that includes service pack 2 and 3.. any version prior to v2002 will have major issues.. in my opinion.. and what i do here at my office.. is to take a fresh copy of sp3 and use nlite to remove all the unnecessary components and make yourself a fully automated bootable iso to install from.. than if and when you need to format you have an automated copy of xp.. also by removing all the unnecessary components windows setup will now take you a maximum of 10 minutes.. from txtmode to first login.. if you are curious about slipstreaming drivers or updates into a copy of xp checkout.. oh and no more "Press F6 to Install Third Party Drivers" :)

I would say XP Black Edition, its all completed with anything you need at first when you install a windows.
this is prob a bit to late, but for whoever is interested, look up TinyXP (Experience). Its by far the best windows xp you can get. It comes preloaded with drivers that auto install, 9 distro's for lighter system resources (less services, etc). it also installs in about 15 minutes instead of the usual 45, and there is no key required.
It also works with windows updates and is fully customized for faster performance.
^ LOL true true. I remember using Windows IceXP a white back before vista sp2 that was probably my favorite.
oh and one our very own offtopic moderator for the computer section made is brilliant.
