I'd use X-Chat if it was still free, but it's inferior to mIRC IMO, the original and best, due to its hugely flexible scripting support.

    Hey Coal,

There's a client based on X-Chat which is improved and free, it's called Hexchat. There are scripting addons which allow you to make perl/python/tcl/lua scripts. It is actively developped and it will surely be even better in months to come, especially since it will be multiplatform.

From a subjective point of view, the client that i use, KVIrc, is lightyears ahead of mIRC for numerous reasons. I never liked the cumbersome way of logging on multiple servers with mIRC, i much prefer creating per server identities and add pre-configured "on connection" commands. mIRC is good but some parts of the program really need a complete redesign to be less old school/unintuitive.

I insist on the fact it's just my point of view.

I agree with some of your points. I think mIRC can probably do everything you'd ever want, it's just you'd have to script it yourself. I agree that it's unintuitive and could do with a UI redesign.

I'm yet to see an IRC client for Windows with a UI I actually like, in terms of aesthetics. I don't think one will ever be made, either.. people are saying that IRC is dying. Saying that though, there was one for mac which I really liked, Linkinus. I'll have to keep an eye on Hexchat if it's being actively developed though, so thanks for the heads-up.

    Hi Tata01,

Don't try the normal XChat client though, download HexChat instead.

    - It's based on XChat source code
    - the UI is the same
    - It adds many features
    - it's free

I'm using Mirc because it's always been there, superflexible and somewhat easy to grasp.
I'll second the guy who said the gui needs an overhaul, but to be honest i dont care much as its just text in boxes, and i want to see the text and not some fancy boxes.
