Default 5 terabytes on the horizon

We "dont have" (except you want to spend more than 300$) the 4tb and Seagate spokeman has said 5tb are on the way (3-5 months from now? WTF?).

Seagate has a Christian Assaf as its channel sales manager for Middle East and Africa, according to a LinkedIn entry, and he looks like the guy in the video. A Google image search throws up more pictures.
Here is a transcript of the relevant part of the video, about six minutes in: "Now we have 1TB per disk. If you just do a simple calculation ... now a drive can have five disks ... so suddenly you make the disk 5TB ... within three months you will see it."
Seagate has a Constellation ES.2 3.5-inch drive which holds 3TB on its five platters as well as a similar 5-platter 3TB Barracuda XT. It looks like we've just seen a product pre-announcement.
El Reg has asked Seagate for a comment. ®

    Bootnote

Since we published this, a Seagate spokesman has been in touch to say: "It is hardly a revelation that hard drive capacities will increase in the future or that sometime soon there will be a 5TB offering."

what about the recent increase in HDD prices ? rather than boasting a pricey 5TB HDD i would like to boast a 200GB SSD. and a 2TB HDD.

    just my views though.. :)

Why one earth did they prices for hdds increase all of a sudden...... has aluminum alloy one used for making hdd platters become that expensive.

I really don't understand the monoplay behind the increasing prices.Tradition in the electronic world prices go DOWN after something new is released and his been in the market for sometime. But it seems vise versa in this case.
Mind explaining this and on top of this whole confusion the top personals of these companies are announcing bigger platter (in this case 5TB) why so lol

A few months ago a big flood hit Thailand and a lot of factories got damaged, because of the already high demand the prices therefore skyrocketed.

Seagate Chief Executive Officer Stephen J. Luczo is forecasting difficult times for the drive industry. Each of the hundreds of thousands of drives Seagate’s Thai factories ship every day contain parts from 130 or so suppliers, many still under three feet of water. The projections by some Wall Street analysts that production will be back to pre-flood levels by summer is nonsense, Luczo believes. “This is going to take a lot longer than people are assuming, until the end of 2012 at least,” he says. “And by then, demand will have gone up.”

I think we will be able to see the capacity per dollar for SSDs increasing between Q4 2012 and Q1 2013 since they have already produced a 128GB 20nm NAND flash die (This means that they could squeeze in about 2TB for a 2.5inches drive). Here's the link to the article for more information: 128GB 20bm NAND Flash Die

I believe the increasing prices for all HDDs is due to the recent Thailand flooding (Factories closed, lower amount of supplies for hdd components etc).

Imagine that you are manufacturing some item, and you are capable of producing 1000/day. The demand is 1000/day and it's not going away.
Then a few of your factories are damaged and now you are capable of producing 300/day.
    What do you do:
    A - go bankrupt
B- increase the prices by a factor of 3 to get similar profit as before and have the money to fix the factories.
A few of the customers will go to the competition because of lower prices, but soon the competition's supply will run out and they will be forced to increase the prices.

Totally agree, that is basic company management (although not my --degree? (dont know how to say in english lol) ).

BTW, I have read somewhere that until april is not going to be any better, in 2012 the production will return to normal but until 2013 we wont see the previous prices. Hope it helps

If they really adopt 1TB/platter technology, we might see reduction in prices on the 1TB models even this year. The current 1TB HDDs have 2 platters and they are more expensive to manufacture. The single platter models are also the most reliable because there is less stuff that can break.

I can't wait for 1TB SSDs to drop in price. I have a couple 2TB HDDs but nothing compares really to SSD.
