Default Windows or Linux?

Windows or Linux? Post which one you prefer. Don't just write 'My OS Rocks'. Actually give reasons why.

Linux, I like it more since it open source which gives the possibility to freedom. More than with windows, which has all those nasty little vendor lock-ins. Word where you can't get around working in a company, and apple isn't a solution for that either, they have it to,even worse, and it's way overpriced from my point of view. =)

I also like the customizability of linux and the Modular set-up. And I am an Idealist so that's why I go for Linux. It suits me better than anything else I have discovered, to bad main support is for windows. Wondering how great it can get with equal support. ^^

Could write more. But this is it for this moment. =) Will get to it later if this topic gets on. =)

Greetings, Elonoir.

I'd recommend Mac, but since that wasn't an option I'll say Linux. Windows sucks big time. The only thing I use it for is for browser compatibility testing and ripping/burning music.

The things I really hate about Windows is:
  • All the problems with viruses and have to run an anti-virus that takes up a ton of resources/memory
  • Just about all software (including the O/S) is extremely bloated
  • Most software is extremely expensive
  • Having to find a driver for anything you plug-in is a major PITA.

I stick with Windows. I used Ubuntu before temporarily, it was OK, but I missed compatibility with all my Windows programs.

I just want to respond to these points (Please, don't take this offensivley, I just want to state my opinion). I personally don't run a background-running virus scanner (I do set my PC to do an automatic scan every month though). All you really need to do is use Firefox with Adblock+, and be smart about sites that you go to and torrents that you download. Never once had a major virus.

I use Windows XP with 512mb RAM, and I find it to run quite smoothly. Even when running multiple programs (I watch movies online while I type in Word, and I IM people in Trillian and have Firefox open) it still seems to run smoothly.

Um, well, about the expensive software thing. I kinda use torrents (thus my participation in this forum). So i don't really worry about overpriced software I deem unworthy of my money.

I just plug almost every device I have in my computer and it works. Except my phone, SLVR L7c, but a quick search on Google found the drivers for that.

And personally, I think there's a lot of customization you can have with Windows if you find the right applications to customize it with.

Not trying to put Linux down, I like it and think it's a great idea, but I still prefer XP.

OK screw this. I'm gonna give a Screenshot of my BT3 Linux desktop. No Mac or Vista desktop looks can compete. :D I'll load it up in half an hour or so....

Actually, I wont. It's too much like hard work....

I'll just explain in words;

GUI
Windows - A single GUI is avalible & it can't be customised properly.
Linux - Lots of Xwindows avalible, so lots of choice. KDE is very customisable.

Security
Windows - Commercial AV required for serious net users. Most viruses are Windows files.
Linux - Built in AV in most distros. Most viruses will not work anyway.

Reliability
Windows - Used by many home users. BIG servers on majority still wont use it.
Linux - Unix based OSs are used by some of the biggest servers in the world.

Compatibility
Windows - The only thing it is any good at.
Linux - Wine & VMware solve 99% of compatibility issues.
