Default Software to recover a hard drive?

My external hard drive is not currently working, I don't know what is wrong with it. Hopefully I haven't lost any data, but I can't seem to get my PC to recognize my external hard drive. I was just curious if anyone knows of any programs that can recover data from hard drives. I would be extremely pleases if I could recover the data myself as it will cost me a pretty penny to have someone from a PC shop do it.

I appreciate the help as always!

Sad thing is, most programs I've come across for data recovery are good at getting data you've accidentally deleted, but not so good at retrieving damaged data.

Nonetheless, here's a program I've had a lot of success with, although it does take a while:

    EaseUs Data Recovery Wizard.

There are two versions, a free one, and a paid one. I don't think I need to tell you how to get the latter at a large discount...

I've used the Easeus software (paid version with a HEFTY discount ) Pheonix data recovery software, and two or three others as well and I must say Easeus Professional Data Recovery has been the best one out of all the different data recovery software I have tried.

data recovery apps wont work if your drive isn't being picked up by the pc... If your pc can't see it, the software won't see it...

It shows up in Printers and Devices in the Control Panel, isn't that a good sign? It also shows up in Disk Managment, its just that I cant do anything with it. If I try to click on the WD unlocker, it just disseppears then I have to restart my PC and switch USB ports.

What are the chances that all of this is caused by a USB cable going bad?

that is a good sign.. if you don't hear any clicking or clattering sound when it spins then the drive is probably good. I would check the cable and remove the drive like copper suggested in your other thread but that would void your warranty.

when I first turn it on i do hear a clicking sound, brielfy than it goes away. but i can tell if the hdd is working correctly or not. i dont know what im suppose to listen for to tell if it is running properly. i really dont hear anything after the clicking.

about the cable. im waiting for WD to send me one in the mail. i went to best buy and the dont have anything close to what i need because its a speciatlty cable that only WD can provide. geek squad too a quick look at my hdd for me. they can only see my password screen, nothing else. they are also scared to open it due to that way its made. best buy pretty much said to call WD and have them help but I've heard from Copper that they really cant help at all. except send me a new one which defeats what im trying to do. so hopefully this cable is the problem and the new one will work.

its funny that all of the best buy works now tell me how horrible these hard drives are. he kept telling me how he had a "my book" and how it failed him after only a month or two. he said WD is a good company just the style that i bought is garbage. should of told me that at the start. i wondered why i got a good price on this. now i know why lol.
