Depends on the type of machine and how it is wired. aka does the battery have to be in the machine for to work. If not you should be fine.

Li-Ion batteries are not as bad as Nicad batteries for having a memory.
You most likely have li-ion battery. Its recommended charging the battery when it drops to 40% to get the most life out of a battery over time. It not recommended to fully drain a li-ion battery. Also it the temperature when charging makes a large impact on life of a battery.

Some batteries have chips that help them charge the batteries better..
But really for you I would keep it plugged in and turned on.

Just make sure the battery and the laptop are as cool as can be.

Just make sure you set the laptop up to have good ventilation. Prop it on something so it gets good airflow. I have used laptops for desktop replacements and for gaming. Heat over time will kill the laptops, so keep them cool.

I haven't given this much thought recently, as I've left it plugged in all the time. But, I think I'll take if off the AC every once-in-while. Thanks for the info.

I try not to leave my battery plugged into my laptop if I'm on the AC for a while, as heat degrades battery life. There are lots of rumors about batteries and its best to read up about them on batteryuniversity

I don't know about any effects it might have on the battery itself, but given that you don't allow the computer to clear the RAM by turning it off, your laptop will get slower and slower as more junk data builds up before it finally crashes.

Usually my Alienware m11x is plugged in, except for when the kids are playing with my plug, grrr.

I figure this, if I need to bring it with me somewhere then I want to have it ready and charged. Sure over time it is not the best thing for it, and then with how cheap batteries are I can always buy a new one.

I think its better to have your laptop unplugged because of personal expiriance.I have a problem with my battery in the past, and when i send it to the technicals and they said that the problem became from the 24/7 charge of the battery.

    The simple aswer is NO.

Reasons: The battery and the overheating.
Many Laptops(and likes) can function without the battery and just being pluged to a energy source. But the overheating will not stop. The harware of a laptop (and likes) are not made as good as a desktop. Even a promotional desktop computer (which in my opinion, can't be considered a computer) has a longer life than a laptop (and likes).
If the battery is kept in laptop (and likes), the usage will kill it in about 1 year (still exception exists, for more than 1 year).

PS: I realize its been a week since the last reply, but, maybe, my answer can be of help :)

What I would suggest to you is to buy a cheapy third-party battery from eBay, take out your OEM battery (fully charged), put away your OEM battery as a spare when you go anywhere or for an extended power outage and abuse the cheap battery from eBay.

    Just my 2 cents worth.
