MKV is an open standard free container format and is entirely open in specification, with implementations consisting mostly of open source software (wiki). Unlike other containers like avi, mp4, flv, rm, etc., MKV is flexible, isn't limited to any codec, and holds anything audio & video. There's a reason this wrapper is superior to the rest and why it's used widely in HD encoding. Simply the best, I'm really sorry you can't enjoy it.
For PS3 you should use ps3 media server to stream your mkv's from your pc to ps3. Works great and you get to keep the quality and DTS audio. Also if your converting the mkv's.... best tool would be mkv2vob
