To check the status of your DVD/CD drive in a Windows computer, you can use the Device Manager utility. The Device Manager utility allows you to manage the hardware that is installed in your computer and also displays the status of each piece of hardware. If you are having problems with your DVD/CD drive, its current status will be displayed in the Device Manager. If there is a problem, you can start the Hardware Troubleshooter from within the Properties window of your DVD/CD drive.

    • 1 Click "Start" and then select "Control Panel."
    • 2 Click "Hardware and Sound" and then click "Device Manager" under "Devices and Printers." The Device Manager window opens.

    • 3 Click the small arrow next to "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" to display the list of DVD/CD drives connected to or installed in your computer.

    • 4 Right-click on the DVD/CD drive you want to check. Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.

    • 5 Click the "General" tab. The status of your DVD/CD drive is displayed in the "Device Status" box.
