I'd say dell gives you the most bang-for-buck. Sony Vaio is mostly just glitter (and you know what they say about glitter... :)). Toshiba is quite rugged, I've had one for over 4 years now. But I'd go with the dell XPS series. If you posted your max budget and other requirements, it would make it easier to answer your question. Also, if you are getting a gaming laptop, my personal opinion would be DON'T! Get yourself a decent PC for that money (The PC will be MUCH more powerful at the same price) and get yourself an i3 or i5 for movies and browsing and stuff. I'd go with the HP probook series, specifically the probook 4530S.

A lot of this is going to be subjective, of course. People buy on all sorts of criteria, ranging from price to specs, to colour/appearance.

Some specific models are better than others, the result of a particularly good design effort. You can get some sense of this by reading reviews from major magazines and if at all possible by handling the models under consideration in person. An important point for many is price and at any given moment, one model or another may happen to be on sale.

In most cases, I personally go with Dell (I'll explain why in a moment) and within the Dell lineup, I favour the XPS models.

    Why Dell?
    1. Dell laptops have a very good bang for the buck factor. Their prices are competitive and if you do some searching online you will find that it's not very hard to get additional business discounts and on top of both, Dell has frequent promotional discount codes.

    2. Dell laptops can be endless customized, allowing you to have just the features that you want.

    3. And the primary reason that I really like Dell is their warranty support. I've owned many brands of laptops and when things go wrong you have two main problems with most brands. First, you usually lose access to your laptop for a period of time (which can sometimes be weeks) while it is repaired. And second, laptops that fail after the warranty expires are very expensive to repair due to proprietary parts. If a graphics chip dies in a notebook, you probably need to replace a $600 - $1000 motherboard. If a comparable chip fails in a desktop, a replacement graphics card might cost a third of that.

I've found Dell warranties to be unusually good though. For a few dollars up front you can get a "next day, on site warranty". Which means exactly that. If they can't fix a problem over the phone.. they will send someone to fix it on site and usually the next day too. And it's inexpensive with Dell to add a few extra years to the warranty. So I usually go for a four year warranty, which is the lifetime of the notebook for me as I'll want a new one before it is four years old anyway. I've even had Dell provide warranty service when I was traveling on a different continent with no out of pocket costs to me.

No, I don't work for Dell. But I am impressed with their warranties.

Hmmm, that's a bit out of the price range that I've researched a LOT on. I don't want to mislead you, but in my opinion, the fourth one on this page:
XPS 17 Laptop - Feel the Thrill with 3D Laptop Screen | Dell
    Would be good for you.

With quite a high budget, I would go for a custom build. Then you can spec it exactly to your needs.

The main difference between a 5400 rpm HDD and a 7200 rpm HDD, is that 7200 may be a bit more noisy, and is faster (meaning your windows will boot up faster, and stuff like the utorrent re-checking will get done quicker) than the 5400 rpm. But since you have such a high budget, I'd recommend you get an SSD for your laptop. An SSD (solid-state drive) is faster than 5400rpm,7200rpm and EVEN 10,000rpm drives. Also, SSD's are more durable and shock-resistant. Hope that answers your question.
