I use Ubuntu to learn Linux itself. Support for this distribution is widely available in the web. My next target will be to learn Debian and use them on my home server and router (using debian mipsel port). I like the way it support several architecture: from PC to routers, NAS and other embedded devices.

I love Ubuntu of the x64 variety. Use it for my servers at my work, as I am familiar with the debian type Linux. I also use DD-WRT (yes that is a linux) on my routers, if they aren't using the freeBSD based pfSense that is. All my boxes have custom kernels. Android is nice too and it is also based off of Debian. I am actually in the process of switching over the computers that can be switched in the clinics from windows to Ubuntu, as all of our programs we are switching to are in the cloud, and are web based therefore we dont need Windows except for the X-rays, and imaging.

I love Slackware. Such an delight to use. I use Arch mostly, though. At the moment I'm doing a lot of installing, and uninstalling of various packages. Arch makes this a lot more automated. Yes, I could install Swaret or something in Slack, but I never felt comfortable with that. If, on the other hand, I knew exactly what I wanted installed I would be using Slack.

Also used/like Gentoo in the past. Although last time I checked, there was so much crappiness going on with the maintainers, that I found it interfered with the end result. Tried Funtoo, but I think it was mostly using Gentoo's repository so didn't see the point.

I'm not a fan of Debian or its derivatives. Including Ubuntu. Red Hat derivatives are a mixed bag. Don't mind Fedora, and probably wouldn't mind Cent OS, but don't really like Mandriva. Can't stand OpenSuSE. Horrible.

Also used other OS's including PC-BSD, Foresight Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD, DSL, Puppy, etc. Each is good for its own thing, I suppose, but found no reason to stick with any.

As for learning Linux, there used to be a saying. Learn Mandrake (Mandrake changed into Mandriva, Fact fans) and you'll know Mandrake. Learn Slackware and you'll know linux. I believe this can be applied today on Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, and a whole host of other easy to use distros. Even Debian to an extent. Most hold your hand so much that you'll find it hard to learn what is happening. Slackware encourages you to jump in and edit the files by hand. Just something to consider.

Ubuntu. I'm familiar with a few more "complex" distributions, but Ubuntu works best for me.
I've seen a big improvement with the operating system for the past 3 years. Pretty much everything works fine after the installation and you don't have to spend a few hours editing config files just to get something working.
Of course, you can still edit the config files to achieve a better customization if you want. That is also very important for me.

I use WinXP and Xandros Presto, an Instant-ON operating system type. I use it just for fast boot and browsing; maybe soon for movies too.

Lately found a lot of use for Backtrack 5, it had a great release with various versions a truck loaded with internet security tools. Great for learning internet security and a extremly advanced tool. I would recommend checking it out
