Default Dalai Lama’s 18 rules for living

Dalai Lama’s 18 rules for living

At the start of the new millennium the Dalai Lama apparently issued eighteen rules for living.

    1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
    2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
    3. Follow the three Rs:
    1. Respect for self
    2. Respect for others
    3. Responsibility for all your actions.
    4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
    5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
    6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
    7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
    8. Spend some time alone every day.
    9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
    10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
    11. Live a good, honourable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.
    12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
    13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.
    14. Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.
    15. Be gentle with the earth.
    16. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
    17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
    18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

But above all things, make sure you DO in fact break rules. If authority was never questioned, we could be a stagnant civilization.
Anyone know how to properly break the rules placed by corrupts? They are the reason why poor countries remain the same. If majority of the people know how, maybe the world could be better.

    18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
Eh? It makes no sence, like judging your salary by the number of hours you work a week. Or the best way do to something is also the hardest? I doubt it.

There are no shortcuts in life. The best way is in some cases may be the hardest, and always rewarding.
And judging your salary by the number of hours you work a week makes perfect sense. i wouldn't work for 1000$ an hour if it took all my free time mate...

Sometimes is not always. The rule implies that the hardest way is always the best which is clearly not true.

I thought judging the salary by the relative salary size makes sence... My example was not about evaluating your wish to work for a certain sum of money, my example was about evaluating your salary (implies that you already work for a certain sum of money).

I wouldn't say it is not true. Hardest way has always it's benefits. People looking for simple shortcuts are just lazy.

The rule exactly says that you shouldn't chase success at ANY cost. Not that you can't get better job :)

Or did I misunderstood your explanation at all? Think so...

I thought that's exactly what rule said... since the success value depends on the effort put to it, than the more effort, the better

Anyway, my point is that when you want to measure something just go and measure it, no need to measure something else and trying to figure out how it can help.

People who look for simple shortcuts are just rational :P If out of identical otherwise ways you pick the hardest way, not the easiest than you're surely some sort of a masochist :P

Yeah, but everything has it's borders. Like, you might put a lot effort in killing man for his wallet, but it's not the best way :)

But you can learn from harder way, as well as help other people. It is all really about what you do seek, whether it is personal success and wealth, or living in harmony with other people.

    Or greedy. :)
Like I said, it's just about what you want, if putting small effort and expecting large PERSONAL income, or living in enhanced society. Good example might be for example emissions policy in factory: you can say fuck it and do not care about polluting world you share with others to gain maximum income, shortcut way, or do something about it, cutting your profit on one hand, but making world better place for you as well as OTHER people on other hand.

    What I said above.
