This is a graph of human population up to the year 2000
The population kept on increasing in the last 10 years and will continue to increase.
The world population was 3 billion in 1960 and doubled to 6 billion by 2000.
There are now nearly 7 billion of us.
Everyone of us needs food, water, energy and shelter.
The resources available on the planet to supply these things are limited. A large number of people already lack these things.
Using resources also degrades the planet.
One reason for action is to reduce impact we have on other animals, species, ecosystems, wilderness and nature.
Even if you don't care about the environment at all you must understand the other reason for action.
We are dependent on the planet for our own survival.
Possible solutions may be:
- Reducing human population
- Reducing human population growth
- Less energy-intensive practices and expectiations
- Environmental restoration
- Improvements in productivity of resource use
I don't think food production and the availability of fresh water can increase at the same rate as human reproduction.
My personal view is that we do need to reduce the human population growth rate and also change the way we live so that we have a smaller impact in terms of resources and on the environment. Not easy things to do.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on the issue and how to deal with it.
