    Default Human Overpopulation

This is a graph of human population up to the year 2000

The population kept on increasing in the last 10 years and will continue to increase.
The world population was 3 billion in 1960 and doubled to 6 billion by 2000.
There are now nearly 7 billion of us.

Everyone of us needs food, water, energy and shelter.
The resources available on the planet to supply these things are limited. A large number of people already lack these things.

Using resources also degrades the planet.
One reason for action is to reduce impact we have on other animals, species, ecosystems, wilderness and nature.
Even if you don't care about the environment at all you must understand the other reason for action.
We are dependent on the planet for our own survival.

    Possible solutions may be:
    • Reducing human population
    • Reducing human population growth
    • Less energy-intensive practices and expectiations
    • Environmental restoration
    • Improvements in productivity of resource use

I don't think food production and the availability of fresh water can increase at the same rate as human reproduction.
My personal view is that we do need to reduce the human population growth rate and also change the way we live so that we have a smaller impact in terms of resources and on the environment. Not easy things to do.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the issue and how to deal with it.

well some countries already regulate population growth, or, try to at least. IE: china, cant have more then 2 kids (and if you do they arent supported by the government).

i don't see how this would ever be enforced though. some religions strictly prohibit birth control etc (see: catholicism)

i think recycling and re-using natural resources like water would be a good focus. like if sewage water/urine could be turned back in to drinkable water =p haha ok i got that idea from enders game sue me

edit: wars seem to regulate population =p havent had a real good war in a while

edit2: didnt know i could even post in the brain stew section

I am From Pakistan. Here population is increasing rapidly. The main cause which i think is most of the people here are illiterate and do not have much awareness about such thing. Most of the people are living in rural areas now a days The Government started a plan to aware the people about this agenda.
Pakistan's estimated population in 2010 is over 170 million making it the world's sixth most-populous country, behind Brazil and ahead of Russia. During 1950-2008, Pakistan's urban population expanded over sevenfold, while the total population increased by over fourfold. In the past, the country's population had a relatively high growth rate that has, however, been moderated by declining fertility and birth rates. The population growth rate now stands at 1.6%

Very Good topic to discuss. Over Population is the mother of all problems.

Solution: Birth Control if applicable (contraceptives...etc but definitely no to abortion)

The problem is discipline. People like pleasure without even thinking what would be the lifelong consequences of their actions. Women get pregnant because they need short-term physical satisfaction. Then they realize they are living in hell after it. And it keeps repeating all over again. This is very true to very poor people who have nothing and nothing to do all night except with what they have.

If people were properly educated and grown mature, I guess it would not be a problem.

Reducing human population should be on every politics discusion since its the source of all problems.
Unemployement, hunger, inflation based on the asumption that this is a consecuence of scarcity), low quality education, low wages, and a long etc.
I think it should be mandatory to have 1 kid per couple at most.
Doing whatever you might think of to reduce human footprint is useless if human population continues to grow.
The sad part of this is that it is an unpopular measure among many people, and its unlikely that any measure to stop it is going to be taken.
I just hope to die before people starts eating each other, or living under opressive military states since they are going to be the only means of control of a large and hungry population.

This can be linked to the other thread regarding homosexuals.

If we had more homosexuals we would not have such a problem with over population.

The human population growth will be reduced anyway. The growth starts expotentially until it reaches the carrying capacity of the population. In a few decades, the graph that greigor linked will get a sigmoid curve.

This is interesting indeed, the ammount of resources in the planet are plenty to support more than our current world population, the problem is the bad use of our resources. Our world economical growth is based almost solely in the consumism, if some place wants money, it has to consume or sell to some other place that wants to consume, the main dream of almost every person in the world is a material stuff, like a car, not achieve something like an academic degree, humanity need stuff to feel complete. A big thing that worses the situation is that in addition to consuming, we don't recycle our trash, so a big part of what is not wanted anymore will taint the soil or contaminate the water we depend on. That is almost sefdestruct imo.

The increase of the population doesn't only support the economical growth, it too is vital for our elder people. You can see countries like Italy and a bunch of european ones are having problems because the people are growing old, but there is not enough young ones to pay the taxes that goes to the elders deserved retirement, creating a big previdence crysis.

The answers relies all at the information, you can see that most of the people have more study and knowlege are the ones that have zero to two kids, wich is an acceptable quantity to control the births explosion. Information makes everyone realize it is easy to avoid a unwanted pregnancy and what number of sons and daughters they can sustain with a good life standard.

To me, the humans will not destroy the planet completely with just our growth (maybe with a giant war), we will perish first, and the planet may take some good milleniuns to be lively again, but it will survive. What will most likely happen is that the population will stabilize around a number, be it because we will finaly learn with our mistakes or because we will not have what to rely on to grow more, and have cycles of growth and shrink.

Religion shouldn't be a matter here and i don't see the point in some people trying to argue with the catholical church about contraceptive methods, religion is about beliefs, if you don't believe in the rules, you shouldn't try to change it, but to find a more suitable faith for you.
