You'd be in less trouble if you released a patcher than a patched exe but it's still very grey.

selling and installing modchips as a company is quite a risky business and kinda a grey area but people have been sued over it before ( no way you would go to jail for it as its still a civil suit )

if you as a company are having the people bring in their hard copys and loading it on there for them and getting it to work (or even loading up a pirated copy as long as they have still brought in the disc and its the same version etc) that is totally legal even if its cracked etc. They may not like it and try to sue you but all you have done is provide your clients with a service to have a backup of something they own which is well within their rights to have

the excuse i had a hardcopy but it was stolen would only work if you had a police report to show it and they didnt catch you seeding the file (its not infringement to download but it is to upload)

EDIT: of course all this depends on the country your in and more importantly how big the company becomes

Unethical? I would say no...if a person owns both the hardware and the software, they should be yours to do with as you see fit, as long as they are for your own use. I know that technically according to the EULA you do not own the software, but I think most people would argue that the EULA itself is unethical and, in a lot of cases, unenforceable.

But illegal? I would bet yes. And even more so if you are doing it for profit. I would think there might be a case in your defense, but you would be you against the big guys...and we've seen how that has gone for other accused copywrite infringers.

I'd be more worried about my physical freedom than my conscience if I were in your place.
