The problem with electric motors, specifically with AC motors, is that initial torque is really poor, so to compensate larger motors are used, but this means terrible efficiency. Furthermore, smaller motors always have worse efficiency than bigger motors. (This is why the idea of everyone having their own personal wind turbine in their back yard is a terrible idea.)

Having said that, wouldn't it be great if the power out of the mains to charge up our cars was generated from nuclear power plants? If it was a coal powered station it would completely defect the point. I get a little annoyed when people advocate reducing carbon footprints and in the next sentence reject nuclear.
