It is one of those 'how long is a piece of string?' questions.

Seriously, how does this constitute a "brain stew" thread? Blatant consumerism at it's finest.
I think that for wedding ring is not too much and to spend 100.000 $
OK...I assume that by wedding ring you really mean engagement ring. Important not to mix those up! In any case, spending a lot of money on a ring is nonsense materialism. That money would be better put towards your marriage and future children.
I had a similar thought when I read it... unless the ring size is huge or he's expecting his marriage to not last a life time, won't you run out of swaps eventually? Still I do think its a pretty creative idea.
Edit: Oh yeah, to answer the OP, I always heard 2 months salary, but I knew a lot of friends in college that when graduating got the ring they could afford without going into more debt (on top of student loans etc). The plan was to replace it with what they really want at the 5 year or 10 year anniversary. Seemed reasonable to me.
One final thought was my brother recently returned from a cruise from Tampa to the Mexican coast. He said in each stop there was a diamond exchange shop (or something like that) with amazing deals. His words were he wish he knew about this before he got married as he could have bought the cruise & an exact same quality stone from these places for what he paid retail for the ring in the States.
