I can't speak for Blair's motivations, but the Bush administration went to great length to fabricate their own 'intelligence' when the CIA produced reports indicating that there were no weapons programs, and that there certainly wasn't any eminent threat to the US. Many of the highest level cabinet members were members of the PNAC "think" tank which had sent an open letter to President Clinton years earlier (1998) urging him to invade and topple Saddam. They deliberately used the post-9/11 xenophobia in the US to enact their long-standing goal under false pretense of clandestine WMD manufacturing. Trillion+ dollars wasted, hundreds of thousands of dead and displaced Iraqi civilians, and ongoing chaos and distrust are the results of the invasion. I can't think of any way to fit the results into what was best for our country, or even for Iraq for that matter.
