    Default SOPA and PIPA

So the latest news on the SOPA issue is that its been shelved for review at a later date. While some may see this as a victory, I see it as an attempt to get the constituents to forget about it, to give the Internet big wigs (like Google and Wiki) time to calm down and for the effect of the blackouts to wear off. I also see it as waiting for Obama to be out of office so he can't veto it. Because I would bet a thousand dollars that if any of the current running Republicans makes it into the Presidential office, that the White House will change their stance on that issue. Only if ROn Paul is elected do I see this getting vetoed, outside of the Obama administration.

What about you? What do you guys think of the proposed law and what the Senate is doing to delay the vote? I'd love to hear your opinions.

I can't remember which site I seen it on (probably maximumpc) but nonetheless one commenter made a valid point as you have. They are only "shelving it" which means at some point when we all let our guard down it will come back and get passed.

Obviously the members of congress are well aware of this being an election year and considering the huge amount of backlash they have recieved from supporting it made them realize there livelihoods are at stake here.

Sadly I think at some point this will pass, maybe in a different format/revision (one that seems harmless to Wiki and Google) but for now it's good to see they have put it off even if it's because the members of congress realize this is a bad time to be for such a bill.

However if we all keep the momentum going and be sure to watch for it's reemergence we shall beat it again. No matter how long it's "shelved" I seriously doubt Wiki and Google won't be ready for it. Matter of fact I am willing to bet Google has people set to keep an eye on this henceforth.

well put egnima78 it is just about survival for the moment that is why this is being put on the shelf. Congress tested the waters and saw that it was not the right time to push the issue so to their advantage they have shelved it for the moment, and you can rest assure that goggle will have someone on point for when they' ll tried to sneak this back out of their bag of tricks

SOPA and PIPA were doomed from the beginning. If you watched any of the coverage of their progression through congress you would of noticed how 95% of the people that were for it did not even realize what it all did. Most of their responses started with "Well I am not a nerd" or "I don't really understand computer stuff," which showed the American public just how clueless our representatives are. Though one good thing did come from SOPA and PIPA. It forced the younger generation to take action and actually get involved in politics, because let's be honest... we don't want our parents and grandparents in charge of the internet.

This whole thing also shows how stupid the average politician is, voting in favor of stuff they don't have any clue on how it works. It is horrible to see the guy who was suposed to make your life better passing laws themselves don't understand.

Now, worst case is how powerfull is the US on forcing down their actions on people that aren't eve american citizens and the consequences that it has. Major dll sites closing down or making themselves useless out of fear from the american authorities. I also don't think that just those blackouts will suffice. The entertainment industry is a business and they recently showed that the american one is the most nasty and disgusting. At least i will try hurting them on their pockets i decided not to pay for any media produced on the usa. This means i won't see any of their films on the cinema, buy dvds, cds or ay type of merchandise. I can only hope to the young generation start learning that more than politicals (wich is also important, though) the best way to deal with those people is messing with what is really important to them: money. Then the response will be immediate.

The fact that matters like these are decided by people that have trouble logging on a computer to check their email is quite shocking.
If the SOPA was passed, the worst thing that could have happened is the major Internet companies like Google moving from America to Europe. This would have been a huge blow on the already bad economy in the US.
And the people in the US that want to access the blocked sites would just have connected to a different DNS server, circumventing the idea of the law with 2 clicks.

Just as Azitox talked about, those who made these decisions can hardly use their laptops well, they can't even spell words like "Schwarzenegger".
What they care about is money, when they find their pockets empty, those big mouths just screw everything up.
Now almost every file storage sites are badly frightened. My life time premium account at Megaupload fed these fat and useless politicians.
Thanks you, those who came up with SOPA and PIPA, you ruined your lovely homeland.

Imagine that this isn't about sopa or pipa, imagine that they had to vote about the american previdence system, the death penalty or other human rights and the response would be "lol, have no idea what this is all about. Give me some money and i will vote". Very scary imo, this is not restricted to the usa only. The picture is aways broader, the same people that are doing those idioticies are the ones in control of the biggest power in the contemporary word, and they were actually elected...

Yes this issue is set aside for now and will resurface again later, the controversy and heat that it brings to the masses/voters is what make nobody wants to take it on for now IHMO ,politicians on both parties dont want any distraction on their political campaign agendas for the upcoming elections, as what have been happening lately the taking down of the major cyber lockers , it looks pretty grim, this shows the deep pockets of the movie industries, the power of their lobbyists and political campaign donations, even if the USA passes this bill if other countries resist enforcing such law and not passing similar bills , there would be haven for pirates but everyone is getting on board and bowing to the might of the US government and the ideology of movies and music industries on how the freedom of speech should be. It would be tough if all this bills are passed and reinforce, but people are creative and clever and always find a way around it.

In France, equivalent is HADOPI. Exact same laws just in a different language. Same resistance from public as well.
