    Default 9/11: A Decade Later

In just 3 Days will mark the 10 year anniversary of one of the worst (if not the worst) tragedies in United States History. That is the day when nearly 3,000 (the number changes every time I try to look it up) died from either being on one of the 4 airplanes that crashed, being at the Pentagon, being at the World Trade Center, being part of the many heroes that took part in saving other peoples lives, or those that died not necissarily on 9/11 but died as a result of 9/11. Many people were that were not only Americans but from different countries as well. Now I know this question has become a rather repetitive one but I am curious
-Do you remember what you were doing when you first found out about 9/11?
    -What was your reaction?
-Did 9/11 affect you in any way? How did it affect you?
-Did you lose anyone during 9/11 that you want to remember?

I am making this thread so we can discuss about this tragedy. I understand that this tragedy affected not only Americans but others as well. Just please I do ask to remain respectful and not turn this into a flame war, especially because I know this is a sensitive subject to many. Be respectful. Now here is my response to my own questions..........

I remember exactly what I was doing when 9/11 happened. I found out about 9/11 when I walked into my morning math class my freshman year of college. It was weird because the hallways were actually pretty empty, usually they are covered with people waiting for class to start. I walked into my class and saw everyone focused on the TV. I asked my friend what was going on and they asked me if I had heard what had happened in New York. I had not so when I saw the TV I was in total disbelief. My reaction was sadness because all those people that had just died in a matter of hours in such a tragic way. I kept watching the TV the finally our teacher says you guys can all go home classes are cancelled for the rest of the day. I went home and watched TV for hours.

I didnt lose anyone directly but I still felt sad for all those people that died. The 9/11 attacks did not affect me directly but they did bring changes to airports, security, and just the way things were done when you wanted to go anywhere involving traveling. The only question is what did this day bring? Did it really accomplish anything? Why did so many innocent people have to die? I guess the real answers to my questions cannot be answered but the least we can do is remember this day and pay our respects to all the people that lost their lives.

RIP to all those we lost.

I remember coming back from my 2nd day at college and walking into the living room, to which my dad said look (at the tv) at first it didn't really sink in, I was thinking ok a building is on fire.....after getting changed and coming back down and realising that it was a plane that hit and then seeing a second hit, that was when it hit me..

My reactions were of disbelief you don't expect to see anything like that in real life.

It didn't affect me directly as I live in the UK but later on that week and the months later you could tell things were different even in other countries, the whole world was affected by it. Getting on trains, or any kind of public transport I would get weird looks as if I was about to do something etc, racism around my area grew quite quickly as everyone that was brown skinned was automatically put under one category.

Nobody I know was lost during that tragic day but every single person that lost their life should be remembered and their families too, god only knows how they felt and coped. Let's hope nothing like that every happens again, lives shouldn't be played with like that no matter what the cause is for.

    RIP

yeah, i remember that day clearlly, at first looking at footage on tv it was like something out of a movie but soon after realized it was happenning in real life,
it is just very hard to understand how another human could actually plot such disaster and wish so much harm on others:( what is wroung with just loving each other
and accepting everyone for who they are and their beliefs.
i am sure i had just come home from work at the time
my reaction was that i could not first understand what i was actually watching, My god people jumping out of the top levels in order not to burn to death:( but to fall to their death:(
i think everyone that knows about it would be affected by it, would have lost some trust in other's which is sad
I also heard that allot of people that worked and help on ground zero have also become very sick from various diseases and reported that they are not receiving
    much support from authorities
my heart and thought go out to those that lost their loved ones!

I was a Junior in HS working as a computer tech for the district, and I walked into the teacher's lounge at an elementary school to replace a video card in one of the desktops. I saw footage of a plane slamming into one of the towers, and I thought it was a movie. I said "holy freaking crap! That was awesome!"

The two teachers in the room looked at me like I was some sort of freak, and that was when I noticed the CNN bar running across the bottom, and realized that this was real life. I became very sad thinking about the people in the building, and apologized profusely to the two teachers.

I believe 9-11 was a tragedy, but I think the resulting power grab by our government was an even larger tragedy that will have an impact on our society for decades to come. Quickly after 9-11, the most broad and sweeping erosion of our civil liberties was passed, namely the Patriot Act. The majority of our representatives didn't even read the bill, and those that did and disagreed were labeled as terrorist lovers. Even the name of the act was Orwellian.

Our governmental response lead to an illegitimate war in Iraq, expansion of Git-mo, expansion of roving warrentless wiretaps, and a drastic increase in the powers given to the TSA, arguably the most corrupt and inefficient instrument of government. 10 years later and our women are being groped by overpaid rent-a-cops, and naked images of our children acquired and stored by these same agents. Keep in mind that the TSA has not prevented a single terrorist act. Yet we continue with the security theater and unconstitutional no fly lists.

More people die in 5 years from bicycle accidents than died in the entire 9-11 attacks. Yet our society has been scared shitless and as a result, we have given up freedoms that our forefathers died for. We have traded our rights for a false sense of security. We have become a nation of panzies.

I fear not the terrorists. I fear our own Jack Booted Thugs and the useful idiots that put them in power.

You have a higher likelyhood of getting struct by lightning than dying in a terrorist attack. Think about that.

The U.S. government's reaction to 9/11 was essentially a lot of butt-covering and blame game. Nobody wanted to look bad for something that , while probably couldn't have been predicted with the mindset of the U.S. at the time, seemed like it should have been predicted. In any case, the U.S. government went overboard, privacy became less important than security, and now we have hypersensitive authorities that go insane whenever some idiotic high school student makes a bomb threat for sh*ts and giggles. In any case, hindsight is 20/20 and I cannot blame Bush Junior for his actions.

While the death toll of the 9/11 attacks is fairly documented, the number "millions of people" you claim USA killed
is ridiculous and you cannot present us with a serious source about it....

I could tell you more about Saddam Hussein who was a nuisance for his own people and did more harm in his reign than
    any US intervention in Irak.

I could tell you more about The talibans ( who by the way are on the verge of reclaiming power in Afghanistan) who
are disgusting pigs that are keeping their country in the middle age.

I don't see how the US forces did kill people in Pakistan ( except targeted terrorists ).

As far as Lybia, once again, i won't cry over the degenerate individual that Kadhafi is !

I'll conclude by saying, that i don't think this thread was meant to propagate your ridiculous anti american propaganda but rather to
pay a tribute to the people that died in the 9/11 attacks.

    RIP.

I reported your post, i don't see how the pictures you posted are relevant here !

Keep in mind that we are not blameless with respect to Hussein killing his own civilians.

When the Shah of Iran fell, we wanted a power base in the region and propped Hussein into power.

We provided the materials he used to gas his own civilians. We continued to provide these materials long after evidence was provided that showed what he was using these weapons for. Much of the "weapons of mass destruction" he had obtained were from British and American sources. By the time we invaded, he had actually dismantled these operations. Information that became clear post invasion indicates that he was afraid of publicly stating that he was no longer persuing biological or chemical warfare, as it would have made him appear weak to Iran's neighbors and his own populace. It was a large bluff, and our own intelligence organizations knew this at the time that Powell was testifying in front of the UN committee. We can speculate on the ACTUAL rationale for invasion, but know that it absolutely WAS NOT to find weapons of mass destruction or punish terrorists.

In the early 80's to late 80's, we provided dual use (read materials that can be used for something like farming OR torture) instruments and trained his military on how to torture people with the goal of extracting information. These instruments of torture were in many cases manufactured by General Electric and even sported the GE symbol.

None of the terrorists involved in the 9-11 attacks were involved with Iraq. There were no weapons of mass destruction. The original proposal was not to "bring democracy to Iraq." This was an after the fact excuse for the invasion, and a poor one at that. We've brought death and instability to the country. I say that any evaluation of the aftereffects of 9-11 should include the hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths that are a direct result of our unjust war in Iraq. Side note, if you are going to take exception to my use of just/unjust terminology here, visit the just war page on google. This is an ethical concept that was used to describe the atrocities in WW2.

Seriously, read up on the history of US involvement in Iraq. You'll be disgusted.

Arguably the largest problem with American foreign policy is that our populace is wholly ignorant about things that have been done by the US government.
