Default Facebook = Popularity and Procastination

Isn't it? I mean, except for wasting time and trying to gain as many friends as you can on Facebook, what real relevance does it have? This could be a controversial thread and people may jump all over me if they are facebook fanatics but I have not been on Facebook since 2008 and I am glad to have done that. There is nothing but time-wasting applications on there now. At least, the original conception was for college students to connect with others and alumni. Now, your 12-year old cousin could check your profile so you better water it down. Also, what about your mom? Dad? Professors? It became more popular but it also destroyed the original novelty of being a select community for college students. Oh well, I guess I will wait for the next application that seems intriguing. Google plus, anyone? But, of course, only for those of us who like to waste time and look popular online.

You don't have to use facbook like that if you don't want to. If someone is an attention-whore, then sure, they'll be adding everyone they've ever met to their friend list and have hundreds of "friends". But aside from that, it's an easy way to let people know what sorts of things are on your mind or happening in your life, and check in with distant / lost friends.

I wouldn't add my parents to my page though precisely for the reason you mentioned. I don't want to restrain myself out of fear of making my mother cringe. I told her why I didn't add her and she understood - although now she suspects that I'm talking about her. hehe

Google+ circle feature seems to make it easier to decide which updates you'll share with different groups. Great idea, I think. Wonder what FB will call their version after they copy it.

facebook already have that feature long before \ of showing particular updates to particular groups or even individuals, and about the original thread I'd say that facebook is usefull in connecting with distant/old friends and as everything is fascinating in a limit, so we should limit our facebook use, then it'd be useful

As long as you don't add people who love to post spam I don't see the big deal with facebook, it's a simple easy to use site to connect with friends....or talk about your day and hope someone actually cares(most people dont) lol

The update filtering for friends/friends of friends etc is a bit clunky to say the least. I looked @ groups a little bit since you mentioned it and I think it can probably get the job done, but it's still not quite as elegant as Google's feature. But I still learned a new thing about FB that I didn't know before, thx! :)

people post such mundane aspects of their lives, every freakin day!
i dont need or want a play by play of your daily life.
dont ask me to "farm" or send u a "heart" or whatever bull@hit there is.
soooo, im not on the "book" much anymore

I'm on it and but I limit myself to maybe once a week to log on. Most of the time if I log on it's to play Zynga Poker!! lol.

I know what you mean about the popularity thing, it does get annoying. I have a few mates that when you see them in real life they are quiet and hardly speak, and then you see them on facebook acting like they have the best life in the world and update their statuses every couple of hours with some of the things I absolutely hate!! Like:

"Is it the weekend yet" - every monday without a doubt a dozen people type that!
"i love my son/daughter/family they mean the world to me" - so what!! doesn't everyone? who cares? arrgghh!!! lol

It really gets to me sometimes I usually update my statuses with jokes etc once in a while but that's it, hate attention seekers who crave replies and compliments.

I probably sound really grumpy now so i'll shut up lol.

I love Facebook precisely because it's allowed me to connect with people I haven't seen in a long time. It's made the world a much smaller place. Just yesterday I found a friend I haven't spoken to in 15 years and it was incredible to talk to her again. Facebook allows you as much privacy as you want so I don't see the problem. If you are careful there is no reason you should fear a boss or coworker finding an undesirable photo of you. If it's used for what it's meant for, it works brilliantly.

I agree that facebook should be limited on a personal basis. However, most of us are tempted to check on our profiles daily whether we admit it or not. Almost like here on T-I. I was talking about the general features of facebook and the community of social networking, more or less.

you just had to mention google+ didn't you, it made it sound like a commercial to google+
the good about facebook is that it let you talk to people you know but haven't seen for some time and keep a connection to her/him with the shit you and her/him are posting :)
on all my other social networks all my friends are people that i never even seen
