I'm going to reply here to avoid too much off-topic in the other thread.
Christianity is based on the Bible. I think the reason people choose to interpret it's message rather than take it by the letter is that it would be near impossible to live by the book exactly like it is written. Interpreting the message gives them a chance to include the religion in their lives. Religion gives people a sense of orderliness. It is comforting because it gives them clear guidelines to follow and provides them with explanations. Having an explanation makes the unknown seem less scary, even if the explanation is not that good.
I have a philosophical approach on religion and gods. There has always been religion. Different ones in different eras, but it's always been there. I think most of these have to do with human nature wanting to explain everything, even when there is no certain answer yet. Many earlier religions worshipped nature, or had very close ties to it. Ancient Egyptians worshipped the sun as their god and creator of all life. (in a way they were right) My country's old religion, like many other nature-based ones, had numerous gods and guardians. Gods and spirits were responsible for weather, seasons, disease etc. Basically everything that wasn't directly controlled by humans, was an act of something greater.
The advance of science has reduced these types of religions. We know that thunder has nothing to do with a god being angry with us puny humans, and we know that diseases are not sent upon us by some mystical force. There are still some things that cannot be explained, but until they can, a god will fill that spot nicely. It brings comfort for humans to think that this is all determined by something, that there is some kind of logic behind it.
Do i believe in God..... No, but he believes in me
take from that what you will
Twice The Fur.....Twice The Fleas...
i think what defines my beliefs better is the term agnostic and i like to thank T-I for teaching me that term
the best way to explain my beliefs is that I don't object to the possibility a deity exist, but i don't have any proof to convince me that it does exist, of course anyone who asked me the last few weeks i just said i don't believe because its difficult to explain to someone who just waited for a yes or a no
what i found difficult to believe is that earth existed for 200 000 000 years and we know there were creatures leaving on earth and that a deity created the humans only 3 000 000 years ago
so i don't believe in the beliefs of any organize religion but I don't object to the possibilities of "The Great Architect" and maybe something might happen to us after we die but thats it
2 quotes that i found that also make me believe that religions can actually have a positive effect on the people N O W that we have knowledge and people "supposedly" will only use it as excuse to not do bad things
the first is from the series firefly
and the other is from the series Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann"Book: River, you don't fix the Bible.
River: It's broken. It doesn't make sense.
Book: It's not about making sense. It's about believing in something, and letting that belief be real
enough to change your life.
It's about faith. You don't fix faith, River. It fixes you. "
and a reviewer beautifully explain
"This leaves us with the impression that whether or not there is a God, believing in a God, having Faith,
can make you whole and happy and can change your life. ...and the change is real, whether God is or not,
whether the Bible is accurate or not, the change has substance."
"the first thing i did when i became leader of the village was to set a limit of 50 on the people who may live here, we must not exceed that number
not even by one. if we succumb to sentimentality or emotion, the village is lost, for me that is the one and only truth.my religion is nothing more
than a tool to that end."
I believe in god, but the church is a shit they are alot of rich that want to keep ur mind occupied in stupid things
i believe in god, the theory of god, but in the church and its practices
When you say "Do you believe in God?", I assume you mean the Christian God.. So no. But if you say A God, then yes. I believe in Buddha. His story makes a little more sense than Jesus and Christian God's story, but who really knows? I keep being told I am going to Hell for not believing in your God, but it is hard to go somewhere I don't believe in.
In my way of thinking, the belief is irrelevant. It is how you act toward the rest of humanity, who you help, and if you contribute to the world in some way. With or without a god or gods, it makes no difference.
I think Duckmanreturns sums up what I think. I don't believe in God, nor in any religions but on the way you treat people and act for the good of human beings, whoever they are.
