Default Alternative Vote vs First Past the Post

So, as some of you know (most probably not) us Brits get a referendum on our voting system, whether or not to use the alternative vote or keep with our current first past the post system.

Because I doubt most of you are extremely knowledgeable in the British voting systems, here's a short video explaining things:

Now, I personally am totally against AV, mainly due to the fact that the AV supporters don't make very convincing arguments, and it seems to complicate the whole system even more.

Websites explaining their point of views:
NO to AV » Against the Alternative Vote
Yes to fairer votes - Yes to AV - Alternative Vote

Default Re: Alternative Vote vs First Past the Post

Shame it didn't pass. I wish we had a voting system like that AV, also known as Instant Runoff Voting or Approval Voting (depending on specific implementation rules) here in the USA. It would allow for viable 3rd party candidates to run for office, which would hopefully fragment our horrible 2 party system into less fiercely partisan standoffs.

In my opinion, if a person can't figure out AV / Instant Runoff voting - they have absolutely no business voting for lawmakers in the first place. The complexity of the world and the laws that will need to be drafted to regulate it are by far more complex concepts. A person who can't understand how to rank candidates in their order of preference cannot possibly have anything useful to contribute to the debate over serious issues.
