Give out some rep guys!

I know all old time members here wish back to the days where we had a "thanks" button instead of "like".

(To newbies: The "thanks" button was there instead of like, and it would ass 1 point to users rep. Very useful for rewarding posts you like without going through the trouble of adding rep points.)

Now, with the like button, it is obviously harder to get rep. Don't get confused by the title. (Eye-opening headlines ftw) I have more than enough rep already. But lately, I have noticed that i receive less and less rep. People hardly give rep for anything! I just gave a rare invite, and got enough likes, but not a single rep point. (Do not go rep me after reading this.) As previously mentioned, I do not really need rep, except for bragging around the big boys here. (I have more rep than some mods :P)

But IMAGINE how hard it is for new members, people that are new to the torrent community, to get rep! I feel bad for them, because we have many newcomers here that I like, but they are stuck at low userclasses because people are too lazy to click three buttons to give some rep. So a little heads up here guys! If you LIKE a post, give the user some rep, even if you don't feel the post deserved your whole rep power, give one or two!

Well actually with the old thanks rep did get given stupidly as soon as an admin or mod posted anything, literally anything, they got about 20+ thanks immediately.

That happens with the "like" button now

But regardless "thank" or "like" doesn't matter if people want to load the staff with them then that is their choice whether we disagree with it or not. Trust me I've noticed this as much as anyone and yeah I will admit that I thought it was crazy with some threads/posts but all I can do is choose not to follow suit. Of course if I feel it's warranted then I will like or thank a post regardless of whom it is.

@Trevor yes we know YOU know how to use the rep button lol and I agree the rep tutorial should be mentioned to the new recruits, as in why not add it to the formal introductions given when we welcome a new member.

I mean it is not as important as the rule and faq links of course but we all start at the same point rep wise and it would not hurt to point the new guys in this direction so that they are aware of what is needed if they wish to increase rep and move up in user rank here.

How do you rep then? Where is this button? Maybe a dumb question but I've still not found it despite being here for a while now.

Edit: found it after a search. The little button that looks like a star down to the left if others like me didn't know...nice blogpost never thought about this before.

^Well never thought about it before. I got some rep myself from getting into dropbox (which was like an invite but not quite) but yeah...didn't even know what it was at the time.

Whenever I get an invite I leave with the Igiver and usually put a thanks in the thread as well. Now that I know how I'll happily rep too ofcourse but for what should that be exactly (for every invite/post I like or just for rare invites like Nil's talking about and "invites that aren't quite invites")?

I don't know, I get rep all the time, I get rep for my "how to improve a ratio" tutorial as well as my giveaways.

My thoughts are... it should not be easy to just glide through the ranks, it should be earned. That is what I thought I read when I first joined T-I. Being a 33% or higher should be because you make a post that people like, it should be because you have earned trust in the community. I have given invites to people that are in the higher ranks, and for their lack of following rules, I have been punished. I can't say how they got to be 55%, but I can say that at 55% you should be highly trusted as it is the last stage (for GA's at least).

So if new people want to grow in the community, they should do something worthy of rep, not just to be given to them freely so they can move up.

A side note, there is always the option of VIP, which helps the community as much as making a helpful tutorial. :)

The authors of the Like system are planning an update next month that includes rep points when you 'Like' a post. We have close to 100,000 existing Likes so there's going to be a huge surge of reps in a few weeks...

I just wish they weren't so slow about that upgrade. They officially approved it about 7 months ago, but didn't release an ETA until a couple weeks ago.

hmm apparently they still haven't released it yet.
