Don't be such an arse

It almost goes without saying that in general I am a huge fan of this community. Since joining just under a year ago I have had the pleasure of dealing with some incredibly helpful people who in some cases have gone out of their way to assist me. Basically, my experience of this site has been fantastic. And that’s why it so royally pisses me off when I see new members, still getting their first taste of this place, getting treated like crap. To be clear, this rant is aimed at one very specific member (who I obviously won’t name but who, if they read this, will hopefully know I’m talking about them) and is certainly not to be taken as an indictment of the community as a whole.

The whole story of what happened is too long to tell but it basically boils down to one member making an applicant (fresh from his accepted introduction) repeatedly jump through hoops in order to get a common-as-muck invite, without once ever trying to explain to the guy what he was doing wrong.

My message to that inviter is this: Don’t be such an arse. You are no better than a child who pulls the legs off of a spider so that he can watch it squirming around helplessly. In fact you are worse. As a grown adult you should know better. Having “high standards” does not excuse arrogance, pomposity, or a dismissive attitude. If you want to flaunt your little man complex go and become tracker staff somewhere (it’s pretty much in the job spec at a few places I could mention). This is not the place to be waggling your e-peen around, and waggling it in the face of people who have 3 posts to their name just makes you look like a burke.

My message to everyone else: Remember that everyone was a newbie once, and there’s a lot to take in when you join here. So if you know better, then just be helpful where you can, explanatory where there’s a need, and leave the tyrannical bullshit for elsewhere.

Rant over.

I gotta say, well spoken. There is too much focus on status it seems sometimes that the higher ups like to exalt themselves by pointing out how noob another poster is. They're usually right but there's a difference between a gentle guiding hand and a prude with a superiority complex. I think a good rule of thumb should be added maybe to the faq or something that "If the join date is newer than the date on your milk jug in the fridge" just try to help. Then beat the living shzicklesticks out of every other living being, oops nono maybe that wouldn't be good either sry got carried away...

Sadly, this is a problem on every blog/forum/website, where status is determined by seniority. The majority of rep nowadays is based on friendships, and not on general assistance/contribution. When I've first joined this website, all I wanted was 2 invites and I'll on my merry way. I had no idea how cool and awesome the community is, to where most of my time in here have nothing to do with gaining an invite. Everyone I've interacted with treated me as if I've been here for years, but as a former lurker, I do know who usually carry an elitist attitude. Does it bother me? Nope, as assholes aren't affected by other assholes. I just brush my shoulders off, and move on.

Kvothe I must say that you do practice what you preach. Most of your interactions with other members are always on a positive note, and usually helpful. You're one of the reasons why this community have more positives than negatives. Props.

    This^

This sums up the behaviours of some people on these forums..... sigh.

Some people are really bad at not explaining themselves. Or are soo self assuming that they think the person already knows what to do. It is a common personality disorder. I usually am not bothered with it but when I do see it I usually PM the OP...

Some mods let the power get to their head, it's sad, but it happens often. I mean I'm not going to point fingers because I'm sometimes a dick to noobish members myslef, but ofc it's not something any community should not tolerate, much less when it's presented by its staff. The staff should set an example for all users however it is clear some can't handle their own image. Thankfully the staff here are not like the staff at places like HDT or x264 who would ban people just for speaking out.....well most of the staff are not.

Keep up the good work Kvothe you're doing an excellent job around here and it's not going unnoticed :)

Just make sure if you do ever see things like this sometimes it might be worth reporting so that we can handle it.

I totally agree and know where you're coming from, it does look bad and sometimes it gets to us...it shows that we all care about this place and our members new and old which is always good.

I will say that it wasn't a mod that I was referring to (just in case that was the impression that I gave). I actually quite like the mods here... most of them anyway.

Really? The mods here suck, specially ASH. (Don't tell him I said that)

I agree with you completely. Obviously new members are going to get stuff wrong the first time they apply for invites, that does not mean that they won't be great assets to the community once they become a bit more familiar with the place, and you should treat them with the same respect you would any other member of the community.

I would love to know who this post is referencing...

I am unaware, but this is the case for pretty much the case for all forums, I'd say TI is better than most at dealing with this kind of thing.

I agree with you on the fact that everybody should feel a responsibility when it comes to helping out new users, that is obvious, and it saddens me when I see incidents of the contrary.
When it comes to GA-requirements, every user, I believe, is free to set out whichever requirements he or she feels fit. For a given tracker that'll for some be just to have a gmail, for some it'll mean something more extensive. Sometimes I feel that an invite might be earned a bit too easy, and sometimes the inviters requirements does seem widely excessive. However, as long as the requirements for invites to given trackers are not specified explicitly by rules, inviters are free to ask whatever they feel necessary, and IMO that is a good thing. If a applicant feels the requirements are too tough, he or she ought to look elsewhere for the invite.
Abuse and harassment = abuse and harassment, and should be reported, but excessive requirements and the enforcement of them doesn't quite go into that category in my opinion.
In the end, new users should be treated nicely as they are the future of the community, and without them it would die, and a reminder of that, such as this post, is good to meet once in a while.

I wasn't actually referring to the giveaway requirements for the invite although I appreciate that my use of the term "jump through hoops" may have given that impression. I respect anyone's right to be strict when setting the requirements for their giveaway and I know some of mine probably fall into that category too.

What I saw was a new member being made to constantly re-do his ratio proofs even though no sensitive data was exposed, and all the needed info could be seen. He was asked to do this repeatedly whilst being given no guidance as to what it was he was doing incorrectly (despite asking for help in this regard). To me that's unnecessary, and that was what piqued my ire.

Nicely said Kvothe. Although it doesn't hurt to be careful, quite the contrary, it is harmful to overdo it, especially for the reasons you mentioned. Putting a little pressure on new people is good but too much pressure will drive them away.

Im not the most active member here.

I feel like i was welcomed from the very start by a guy called silentninja but also in general. When that is said i have feel the same things. Maybe not so much about me (I dont say so much hehe.. so ye oh well) but maybe for others.

Being new you are bound to be the noob that knows little. And that is very natural. So when i see a person degrading a noob whit hes "superior" knowledge i giggle. The same i do when i see a person using words that are deemed uncommon in most social situations, thinking that makes him oh so "intellectual" this makes me giggle to ^^
