Default How to manage your torrents from your iphone

The first thing that came to my mind when i got my iphone was, how can i continue to absorb the worlds media on the go. After a little research i found a combination of three applications that will let you remotely add torrents to your download queue from your iphone.

This tutorial is for OSX but it can be easily done for PC and linux since the applications used are available for all three.

Here is the list of applications used in this tutorial

    • Trackr (iPhone App)
    • Transmission
    • Dropbox

    First Step - Dropbox

If you already have dropbox you can skip this and go straight to the next step. If you don't, goto this link and signup www.dropbox.com (I added my referral url, if you don't want to use my referral link just goto dropbox.com.. but it doesn't hurt :)
After you get your login you can download the program and install it, when it opens for the first time it will ask you if you already have an account, say yes and enter the info you entered when signing upo on their website. Now to step two.

    Second Step - Transmission (Transmission)

Next we'll be downloading transmission, i'll go ahead and assume that evenyone knows this one and you probably already have it installed...if not head over to Transmission and follow the install instructions.

Third step - Trackr (Muzi Software - Home) $2.99

Grab your iphone and hope over to the itunes store (or to your favorite iphone app tracker if you have hackulo.us and Cydia on your phone). If you're like me and you don't have a jailbroken phone and don't mind spending $2.99 for an app... (especially for what it will be used for) then buying the app won't be an issue.

Trackr is essentially both a web browser and an RSS reader, the only difference is that it allows you to download links to either your iphone or to a folder it creates in your dropbox. If you look at the app reviews they are less than stellar but these people don't see the utility here :)

Once you have the app installed open it up and goto to the dropbox settings and enter your account info, this will create a folder in your dropbox called "Trackr", now go back to transmission and edit the preferences as follows:

    Now go back Trackr

Here you will add the trackers you want as bookmarks ( you can also add RSS feeds with direct download links. Make sure and configure your dropbox account within tracker before brosing for torrents.

Once you find the file you want to download it will be downloaded and synced to the Trackr directory in your dropbox folder on your home computer.

So there you have it, you open Trackr on your iphone, upload the torrent from your iphone to your Trackr directory in dropbox, which then syncs it with your home computer and finally transmission scans the directory and automatically adds and starts the download in your bittorrent client!

If you want to now view the status of the uploads, enable the transmission webui and navigate to your IP with safari on your iphone. Transmission includes an iphone tailored webui.

    Enjoy!

Looks like a great tutorial, I will probably try it on my iPhone when it arrives. I was wondering is there any way to actually download torrent files to your iPod (not just the torrent link, the movies/music etc.) and then load them onto your computer? I could go around downloading when I please without using my home bandwidth:)

I can't find the windows version of "Transmission" in the website you mentioned in the tutorial!
Is it possible to do this on Windows? I hope so :(

Thanks for this tutorial. Helped me to find my own solution. Tools I'm using:

    - iCabMobile
    - Dropbox
    - uTorrent
    - uTorrent web interface for iphone

Instead of Trackr, I'm using iCabMobile, a webbrowser for iphone:
    iCab - Mobile

iCabMobile allows to download torrent files to DropBox. So I'm using DropBox as well for transfering my torrent files to the watch directory of my bittorrent client.

Instead of Transmission I'm using uTorrent with a web interface for iphone, wich you can find here:
    iPhone Web Interface for µTorrent

Instead of iCabMobile I think you can also use Atomic web browser:
    Atomic Web Browser

Atomic webbrowser allows to send files to dropbox as well, so this should also work (I didn't try).
