When we talk about music, What is the go to tracker for many. To download from What, you need to have a good buffer. As, it isnt necessary that some one else will leech from you, thus plummeting your buffer.
It will be difficult to go on ratio watch if you seed for long, as they have an amazing way to calculate your required ratio. Required ratio takes into account your time on site, amount you have downloaded and the number of torrents you have snatched.

I am here to share some tips on quickly achieving that Buffer and getting the PU upload requirement asap. New members on what and Wannabes, I hope I have your attention now
Once you are in What, you need the following items:
1. Seedbox and IRC
2. Selecting torrents to download
3. Uploading Torrents
4. Friends.
5. Lotsa free time

1. Seedbox:
Seedbox is most essential if you are looking to reach PU status at earliest. If you have a Gbit box - nice, 100 Mbit Box is good enough too. Seedbox's GUI must have ability to make torrents. Now, that you have joined What, setup the IRC in your home PC and join the announce channel. Setup your irc-client to highlight you on "2010" and "scene". Now this will highlight you whenever there is a 2010 or scene posted in irc. This will help us to identify any new uploaded torrent of year 2010 and scene torrents. The announce chan has a direct download link for the uploaded torrent , so you can straight download it and upload to your box. Keep your rTorrent GUI open or auto upload using FTP, its upto you. I advice, manually uploading torrent to box as you are in more control.

2. Selecting torrents to Download:
You are new in What with just 500mb up and looking for which torrent to download so that you can get some buffer out of it. With torrents being uploaded every 10 mins, you are confused My tip is dont be :001_smile: ; dont be afraid to download new torrent. But your selected torrent must have some calculated risk in it.
Lets get Downloading Lurk in What's irc-announce chan. and jump only on torrents of year 2010 and scene torrents !! Now, torrents of 2010 can be divided into popular and non-popular ones. My advice is, as a new-comer you are safe with torrents from "VA" or Mainstream artists, mixed tapes from good labels, dance mixes, trance albums, techno, elctronic and scene torrents ofc. With this selection, I promise you, you will have a good buffer in two days. Mind you, other members who jump early on torrents there have Gbit Boxes, so if you have a 100 Mbit box, you might not do good initially. What is not like TT !! So, need to leave the torrent seeding for long.
Initially , with 100 mbit box you might do a 0.6 ratio, dont lose heart on that and dont worry about your ratio atm. As you are new, rqd. ratio is still 0 :001_tongue:
Selecting the format: New torrents are uploaded in various formats like FLAC, V0, V2 ,etc. If you have noticed the trend, the V0 format and FLAC have most leechers. So, even if you have downloaded a format, I advise you to go for V0 for sure, after 10Gb of upload , i will suggest that you go for all new formats of torrent uploaded.

3. Uploading Torrents:
Read the Upload Rules carefully and only then upload on What. Search before you upload. You need to have access to files not available on what - ebooks, elearning videos, applications, CD Rips.
To get PU status, you need to upload atleast 5 torrents , which will be active when you reach PU status. So, we need to find good source of Quality files, if its scene, the better !!
Now, here's a confession, What is good but sometimes, CD Scene rips get pred somewhere else first. Only if you can upload these music files on What first, you are sure to get 1+ ratio on that torrent !! I am saying only 1+ since, the moment your torrent goes to someone's Gbit box , you are out of swarm, I am serious guys !! Gbit boxes wont let you stay in swarm for long And when you upload the torrent as scene, you are definitely gonna get atleast one leecher for sure ! Upload Latest EBooks and Audio Books. As, the more you upload, the more possibility of members downloading from you. The most popular genre of music will be trance, techno and electronic music besides the scene rips. You can rip CDs but you wont have time if you are planning to make it quick. Nonetheless, uploading popular genre on what is a nice way to get buffer, also, upload all formats of the CD.


4. Friends:
If you are in What, you already ought to have nice friends in other trackers. Approach only them, and politely and ask them whether they can help you out with some download by leeching from you. If you are a good friend to them, they will gladly agree. Once they approve, pass them links of your uploads and you have just opened your last Ace :001_smile:
If you have uploaded good files of decent size and have friends download them off you, you got some fantastic buffer, all thanks to your friends. Do return this favour once you attain your buffer/PU status. Returning the favour will go a long way and further cement your friendship.

5. Free Time:
If you have regular access to SeedBox, then you can follow these tips in your own sweet time. But, if you have access only for a week or so, you need to put in a couple of days.
Keeping an eye on announce chan. and manually uploading torrents will require you to be free for a couple of days. The seedbox , will have RSS direct download option, if you can set it up with filters, well and good. If you dont have time, then manually uploading the torrents or auto-upload via ftp are the other options.

This write-up is mainly intended for new members at What and What-wannabes, so that they know what they will require to get a quick good buffer on What !!
By attaining a buffer early, you can download your choice of music at a later stage without worrying about your ratio.

Another addition to this guide is to look at the requests section, many people are looking for music or applications to be filled and some come with a hefty bounty, which helps build ratio. This is what i did and now i have a good buffer to deal with.

Great guide, buddy! I'd also like to add something that is helping me out (I'm still not a PU but I am at least showing a positive ratio at the moment).

Make sure to take a look at the News Announcements on the main page and in the forums. Here they will posts "Staff Picks" from time to time. The good thing about these is that whatever the Staff picks as their favorite, all formats become freeleech automatically - and anyone who has been a member of What for any amount of time knows how RARE it is to find What doing any kind of freeleech event. So make sure you take advantage of when those Staff Picks are posted!

Good stuff! I just uploaded every freeleech torrent into my seedbox and waited 2 weeks to get 25 gigs uploaded :P

As mentioned by members here, staff picks are good way to earn buffer. But imo, most important is to jump on these at early stages. If you want it quick, you have to be the first one.
Remember, that its a rat race out there. Once you attain your buffer, you can enjoy that mozart file which no one is gonna leech from you ;)

I will follow your tutorial to its fullest. I need to get my ratio's up. Dang it's hard though. I haven't upped to a 1 to 1 ratio. I did grab the latest torrents, and still need to get those uploaded to a 1 to 1 ratio. The seedbox I had, didn't even do much. I really don't know why. Lol. Its a hard tracker I must say! very hard indeed.

Another best way try to upload or seed bigger applications first for pc or mac ,cross seeding another way to burst your ratio.
