Thread: RSS Feeds - Increase your ratio quick with auto-downloading!

This is a tutorial on RSS feeds, and how to use them to your advantage.

I will be using uTorrent in my example, but the steps should be similar for other clients that support RSS downloading.



Things you will need:
uTorrent
A Feed

Assuming you already have uTorrent lets find ourselves a good feed.
On most trackers you can find the feed in one of two ways.

In firefox, you can click this button in the address bar to launch the RSS subscription page.

From there copy the address link.

If the button is not there, then try looking at the FAQ or Links page of the Tracker.
If you can't find it, try searching the forums.

The address link will generally look something like this:
http://www.mytracker.net/rss.php?passkey=47473204jd

Don't forget to make sure its a Direct Download Feed.

Next open up uTorrent.
Click Add RSS Feed.


This box will popup.
Paste the URL of the RSS.
You can give it a custom name.
Make sure you don't choose to automatically download all torrents.

Hit ok.

For this example I will be adding a filter for the show "Weeds".
Go to Options > RSS Downloader (Or hit Ctrl + R)

Fill out the information however you'd like.
This is what I chose.


You can choose which episode number you'd like or simply download all Weeds torrents.
I chose 4x11 for example.
If you want to choose more than 1 episode you can do 4x3-5.
This will only download episodes 3-5 in the 4th season.

To make sure it only downloads the first version of the episode check the Smart ep filter.
This way it wont download the same episode more than once.

Then hit Add, and Close.

That's it, your Done!
Now it'll download for you even when your not on

Part 2 - Advanced RSS Downloading..

Since the last time I posted I've learned a bit about RSS in uTorrent, thought i'd share!

First of all my major issue with this method was not knowing how often the feed updated..

You can manually update all your feeds by right clicking on "All feeds" and selecting update feed.


Or you can select a single feed to update by choosing only that one and hitting update feed.

Of course this can get tiresome, but the best part is that you can change the interval at which the feed automatically updates

Navigate to Options > Preferences > Advanced.
Scroll to the bottom where it says Rss.update_interval.
You must change it to an interval above 5 or uTorrent will autoset it to 5.
Then hit Set, and Ok.
5 isn't much but less than that and you risk being warned/banned from your tracker!
Also its much better than the default of 15 minutes.

Now ill continue with some syntax tricks.
Back to the RSS downloader (hit Ctrl+R)

Last time i didn't talk about wildcards.
The *'s in the image below are wildcards that mean anything 1 or more characters can be before or after this text.
So for example, this would find BlablaWeedsbla.

? can replace *'s they mean the same thing but for just 1 character.

In the not section, you can specify what you don't want.
For example, looking above, it will only download Season 5 Episode 12 of weeds (and on because of the -)
It will not download episodes with ac3 audio or 264 video.

Also it will only download the first one.

"Filter matches original name instead of decoded name"
Means that the filter will only try to match the original torrent name, such as "True.Blood.S02E10.720p.HDTV.X264-DIMENSION".


Also the minimum interval means that it will not try to match the same file for however many days you set it to after it's originally matched.

The smart ep filter takes its place though, so it's not necessary.

One last thing.
If you want to see the recently found files for a specfic filter select it from the left and hit ?.

From what I know uTorrent webui had it in the leaked version.
However it was incomplete and got removed,
I'm sure it'll come back eventually.
Torrentflux has RSS capabilities.
I don't believe rTorrent does but im sure theres a script or plugin out there somewhere.

This increases your ratio, because you get on new torrents quicker.
Therefore uploading more than if you started the seeding process later.

Yes, wouldn't an "automatic upload device" increase your ratio :laugh:
Compared to manually starting the torrent.

This way you can be half-way across the world and still download and seed new torrents.
The first few minutes of a torrents life are the most critical for ratio-gathering.
