pebbles, a good tutorial with lots of good tips. But it was obviously written with public trackers in mind.
And since most T-I members use private trackers, it was important to point out that enabling the DHT/peer settings could easily get someone banned at their tracker(s). Apart from that though, good advice.

Perhaps another setting to discuss at more length is the encryption choice. As many ISPs throttle bittorrent connections these days, changing the encryption setting to "forced" and unchecking legacy connections will often provide a 100%+ speed boost because the ISP (typically) won't see the traffic as bittorrent anymore.

There is a theoretical concern that the occasional swarm client may not be able to connect in this case, but I've never seen that actually happen in practice and the speed boost is gratifying if your ISP is one that has been throttling torrent traffic.

I have a little contradicting opinion here, changing Encryption setting "force" is fine for private trackers, but for open/public trackers this may reduce the number of peers, but the one I like to point out is unchecking legacy connections will not encrypt the bit torrent connection as a normal data traffic, we must enable/check it to cheat our ISP is my understanding.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

If your ISP throttles bittorrent traffic, encryption will typically produce huge speed increases. If your ISP doesn't throttle, then there is no speed advantage to be had. But IMO, encryption is still worthwhile for the inherent privacy and security benefits.

If you "force" encryption you will have maximum security (and speed if throttling is involved). But it's possible that the forced setting could reduce the number of peers. This could happen if there were swarm clients that did not support encryption. I've done extensive benchmarking and have not found this to be a problem in any degree in actual practice. YMMV. For those who are concerned that they might potentially loose the occasional swarm client.. then "enabled" encryption is the compromise that would negate this concern at the expenses of reduced security (and possibly reduced speed).

The "allow legacy connections" means allow unencrypted connections in. So this must be unchecked to force encryption of inbound traffic. Again if you have concerns about missing a few swarm clients that don't support encryption, that would be a scenario where you would check (enable) leagacy connections.

The role of encryption is two fold. Protecting your privacy by obscuring the nature of the traffic. And often boosting speeds by obscuring the traffic type to ISPs that strive to throttle torrent traffic.

Default µTorrent switches DHT and PEX settings for private trackers automatically

There seems to be a little misunderstanding as to how µTorrent handles DHT and PEX settings for private and public trackers. The initial poster's recommendations are therefore correct and cause no problem with private trackers.
