Thank you so much for the info. Much of it will be of great help. I do have one tip to add that I think may help some people. Go into the TV episode section or less preferably movie section. Look for a popular episode or movie that is not available in 700 mb size. Find a way to obtain said file in a size that can be burned to a CD then create your own torrent and upload it then seed like crazy. My point is, there are plenty of people out there that still have yet to buy a DVD burner (myself included) and can only burn their DivX or Xvid movies or TV episodes to CD to view on their DVD players. Cater to these people when popular files are unavailable to those without DVD burners. There is a demand and people will download if it's popular enough. The key is to just keep an eye out for such opportunities.

Cool tips, I appreciate the insight. It's curious, though, as many of my "top quality" trackers stay away from bonus points, although a couple rely upon them heavily. I assume that they wreck an economy to a degree, and can definitely understand where the trackers are coming from when they choose to abstain from point systems.

good tutorial for the new comers but one sure fire way to get a good ratio and keep finding stuff to upload there is plenty of things that never hit a site unless you put it up there

excellent tips, whenever I get a new account I go for free leech or limited leech 25/50/75% to build up a positive ratio. Also smart to snatch new releases immediately so that you upload as much as possible to other users as they trickle in :)

Fantastic tips, they are the guidlines I use myself, one thing I would advise newbies though is to be very careful when loggin in on a public computer or letting one access their accounts from your computer.

I am at the moment baffled as to why when I created my first account at TheBox.bz it was disabled within hours and I have been wrongfully accused of creating dupe accounts.

The only thing I can think of is when I was in the building of a backpackers hostel and my computer falls into the ip address range.

Thanks for the info. Most of it seems common sense but definitely a few nuggets of wisdom in there. I am new to the Private Trackers scene and looking forward to getting some quality files...

Thank very much for the informative post. I wasn't aware of some of the torrent configuration setings- always good to get a heads up before you dive in

    9. Set a proper Upload Limit

Setting a proper upload limit in the BT client makes all the difference! You’ll want to supply a high enough limit to maximize uploading, but not have it eat into your download bandwidth. The general rule is to set it at 80 - 85% of your upload limit. To figure this out, visit www.speedtest.net and conduct the simple test. Results are shown in kilobits, so divide the result by 1/8 and then multiply that by 0.85. This will give you the proper number in KB/s (KiloBytes).

In µtorrent, go to OPTIONS > Preferences… > Connection and enter your upload rate. Click “Apply” and then “OK” to save the changes. While your in that same ’settings’ page, make sure to use a port number from the good list (e.g. 49152 - 65535).
I'm not sure how many people this will help...it is kind of nitpicky since many people will intuitively know what you meant. However, as a math teacher, I can tell you with 100% certainty that many people, maybe even most people, find 'simple' arithmetic falls somewhere between 'hard' and 'counter-intuitive'. For the arithmetically-challenged the slight mistake here is too subtle to notice and gives radically incorrect results.

Do NOT "divide by 1/8". This does exactly the opposite of what you need. Dividing by 1/8 th gives a number 8x as large as the one you started with and you are looking for a smaller number...for every 8 bits there is only 1 byte, so the resulting number stated in bytes must be smaller by a factor of 8.

You may do either of the following as they are mathematically equivalent...

    1) divide by 8 ; OR 2) multiply by 1/8.

The first option is the simplest by far, both in terms of computing in your head and in terms of keystrokes for a calculator.

It is the same thing as converting inches to feet, etc. When describing some specific amount/measure there's a greater number of the smaller units than there are in terms of the larger unit. To state 36 inches in feet you divide by 12 (inches/foot), and get 3 feet.

Further, if the speed test reports a value in terms of Mb (megabits) you need to divide by 8192 (8x1024) to obtain the same value in terms of kB (kilobytes).

If this helps even one person, you're welcome.
