In my experience it depends on the tracker. Ive found that xvid movies generally seed well. Its normally a case of just monitoring the trend - there may be a TV series that everyone downloads, etc etc..

When I start out I usually download some DivX DVDRips, good for seeding and only about 700 GB.

Its also good to seed for as long as possible. New popular torrents will slow down after a day, but after about a week they will start seeding great again. Buy a large enough HDD to support your downloads and seed as long as you can. You should not have any problem keeping a good ratio if you do that. Plus you wont have to download a bunch of torrent you don't want, just because they seed well.

wow, thanks for the great guide man :)
i only have a question about this part:
    9. Set a proper Upload Limit

Setting a proper upload limit in the BT client makes all the difference! You’ll want to supply a high enough limit to maximize uploading, but not have it eat into your download bandwidth. The general rule is to set it at 80 - 85% of your upload limit. To figure this out, visit www.speedtest.net and conduct the simple test. Results are shown in kilobits, so divide the result by 1/8 and then multiply that by 0.85. This will give you the proper number in KB/s (KiloBytes).
My download speed is considerably faster than my upload and i dont download many torrents at once. However im concerned mainly for my ratio (as my up speed is crap). Is it still better to limit my upload speed if im only seeding most of the time? Or does this affect upload rate too?

The reason your speed should be capped (80 % for upload speed/ and 90 % for download speed) is purely technical.
The data which you receive / send will have to give back a ACK(acknowledgement) to the sender/receiver, so if you utilize the whole bandwidth for seeding/leeching, ACK will not be sent, hence there is a possibility that some data might be resent, making the seeding/leeching process so much longer.

The extra buffer which you leave for in the bandwidth will provide sufficient space for the ACKs to be sent without actually affecting your DL/UL.

Thanks to Trevor for repping me in

Here's one that I've figured out that fits into 2, but it's more specific.
I like to go after what I call "wall" torrents - torrents that are new, so they only have one seeder, and the seeder is slow. If you download one when it's a little way through, and look at the graph of your upload speed, it looks like there's a big wall.
These are great for the ratio if you get them while they have just been uploaded, and are still good even at 25% or maybe even more. When I downloaded Civilization V on Demonoid, I seeded to 20:1 before I got the file (which didn't all go to Demonoid because it was released to TPB also).
Some trackers show you what percent the leecher farthest along is at, and when they do, you can see if they will be a really good torrent for your ratio.

This is a great guide, specially for people that are new in the torrent-world. I think it's important to start off with newly released torrents when you start of your account. And free-leech if available. It's always a good thing to kick start your account rather then struggling for a long time with a poor ratio. Trackers usually only allow a limited number of simultaneous downloads if you have a poor ratio as well, so make sure you do some smart moves in the beginning so you don't have to struggle with a poor ratio.

This guide is very good at explaining the steps towards a good ratio.

I wish I would have access to this post a few years ago. Great post for all the newcomers. I will send my little bro the FSF link to help him out. Thanks.
